Robert Hooke was the first to observe cells in 1665 using a basic microscope with three lenses and stage lighting. He saw plant cell walls that resembled small rooms, which led him to name them "cells". However, Hooke was only observing the dead cell walls of plant cells and not living cells.

•Who saw cells first and when?
ANSWER
• In year 1665 ,a scientist named Robert Hooke first saw a cell . His microscope
used three lenses and a stage light, which illuminated and enlarged the
specimens.

• He remarked that it looked strangely similar to cellula or small rooms which


monks inhabited, thus deriving the name. However what Hooke actually saw
was the dead cell walls of plant cells (cork) as it appeared under the
microscope.
