Introduction
Concrete is of great importance in construction and
other building works.
Need of concrete will further increase to 7.5 billion m³
by 2050.
At least three-quarters of the total volume of concrete
consists of coarse and fine aggregates.
Natural resources such as river sand are getting
depleted.

Contd…..
The thermal power required for the country is rapidly
increasing
Coal fired thermal power plants fulfil about 65% of
the country’s electricity requirements.
Thermal power plants burn about 407 million tons of
coal.
It produce about 131 million tons of coal ash
annually.
4
Contd…..
15–20% ash is bottom ash and the balance is fly ash.
Furnace bottom ash (FBA) have no pozzolonic
property.
grain size distribution is like that of sand(CA)
Can be utilised as a sand substitution material.

About pond ash
Pond ash is a waste product from coal based power
plants.
Fine particles less than 4.75mm.
Accumulation of pond ash is a serious environmental
threat.
Sand can be replaced by pond ash without
compromising strength & durability.

9
Uses of pond ash
Provide economical concrete.
Effective waste management.
Reduce cost of the construction.
Find optimum strength of partial replacement of
concrete.
Minimize the maximum degradation in environment
due to pond ash.
10
Disadvantages of Pond ash
11
Methods of disposal of pond ash
Thermal power plants adopt wet ash disposal method.
In wet method fly ash & bottom ash are mixed with
water and transported to ash ponds.
Storage of ash in large ponds and dykes.
Other method is dry disposal in landfills.

Mix proportioning
No standard method of designing concrete mixes with
pond ash as fine aggregate.
Mix design proposed by IS method were first
employed FOR conventional concrete mixes.
Natural sand was partially replaced by pond ash to
obtain the PAC mixes.
The specimens were cast for M30 grade.

Results
• Low specific gravity.
• High carbon content
• Loss on ignition.
• PA is finer.
• Reduction in slump value.
21
Contd…
• Unit wt. of concrete gets reduces by addition of pond
ash
• The 7 days, 28 days & 56 days strength shows
increases in strength upto 20% of replacement.
• The 7 days, 28 days and 56 days strength reduces
on further additions of pond ash.
The strength of concrete with pond ash also improves
with age of concrete.

Density of concrete reduces with the increase in %
of pond ash.
Compressive strength of concrete with pond ash incre
ases with increased curing.
Split tensile strength increase upto 20% with addition
of pond ash sand replacemnt
Flexural strength increases upto 20% with addition of
pond ash replacement.
26
Continued…
Use of pond ash reduces workability, to overcome it
superplasticizers are used.
Increasing replacement by pond ash reduces strength
due to low specific gravity.
