Polynomials
Term: a number or a product of a number
and variables raised to a power.

3, 5 x 2 ,  2 x, 9 x 2 y

Coefficient: the numerical

factor of each term.
5 x 2 ,  2 x, 9 x 2 y

Polynomials
We can classify expressions according to the
number of terms:
Monomial: an expression with exactly one term.
2
ax , rt , 2x ,4 9x 2 y

Binomial: a expression with exactly two terms.

x  8, 5 x 2  2 x, 2 x  9 x 2 y

Trinomial: a expression with exactly three terms.

x 2  x  8, r 5  3r  3, 5x2  2x  7

Polynomials
Polynomial is an expression
consisting of variables and
coefficients, that involves only
the operations of addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and
non-negative integer-
exponents.

degree where a0, a1, a2,… an-1, an are
real coefficients and a0=0

Polynomials

Degree of a Term (with one variable) is the

exponent (power) on the variable.
5x 2  2, 2x 4  4, 9m  1

Degree of a Term (with more than one variable) is

the sum of the exponents on the variables.
7x y  3,
2
2x y  6,
4 2
9mn5 z 4  10
Degree of a Polynomial is the greatest degree of
the terms of the polynomial variables.
2 x  3 x  7  3,
3 2 x4 y 2  5x2 y3  6x  6
We can also classify polynomials according with their degree:

If the polynomial has:

- degree 0 it is called “constant polynomial” or

- degree 1 it is called “linear polynomial”
constant
- degree 2 it is called “quadratic polynomial”
- degree 3 it is called “cubic polynomial”
- degree 4 it is called “quartic polynomial”

Zeroes Of Polynomial

p(x) = 5x3 – 2x3+ 3x – 2.

If we replace x by 1 everywhere in p(x), we get
p(1) = 5 × (1)3 – 2 × (1)2 + 3 × (1) – 2
= 5 – 2 + 3 –2
=4
So, we say that the value of p(x) at x = 1 is 4.
Similarly,
p(0) = 5(0)3 – 2(0)2 + 3(0) –2 = –2

Zeroes Of Polynomial

p(x) = x2 - 7x +1 2 .

p(1) = 1 - 7.1 +1 2 .
2 A real number k is said
=6 to be a zero of a polynomial
p(x), if p(k) = 0
p(3) = 32 - 7.3 +1 2 .
= 9 - 21 +12 = 0
p(4) = 42 - 7.4 +12
= 16 - 28 +1 2 = 0
