Introduction To Radar Signal Processing

This document provides an introduction and overview of weather radar signal processing. It discusses the basics of radar theory and how weather radars use electromagnetic waves to detect weather phenomena. It also describes the main types of weather radars, which are classified based on their operating frequency band - L band, S band, C band, X band, and K band. For each band, it provides details on the wavelength, frequency, advantages, and common applications. The overall purpose is to introduce the key concepts of weather radar systems and signal processing.

Weather Radar
 The major distinction between meteorological radar and other kinds of
radars lies in the nature of the targets.
 Using the scattering effect of cloud and precipitation on
electromagnetic waves, the radar system will quickly obtain the
weather observations (e.g. tornado, hail, rainstorm, etc.)

Weather Radar Types
 Weather radars are pulsed radars with Doppler capability. So we can
call them as Pulsed Doppler Weather Radars.
 Weather radars can operate in different frequency bands. So a
classification can be made based on the frequency band as follows:

1. L band radars
 operate on a wavelength of
15-30 cm and a frequency of
1-2 GHz;
 L band radars are mostly used
for clear air turbulence
studies;

2. S band radars
 operate on a wavelength of 8-15 cm and a frequency of 2-4 GHz;
 Because of the wavelength and frequency,
 not easily attenuated and thus useful for near and far range weather
observation;
 requires a large antenna dish and a large motor to power it;

3. C band radars
 operate on a wavelength of 4-8 cm and a frequency of 4-8 GHz;
 Because of the wavelength and frequency,
 the dish size does not need to be very large and thus affordable for
TV stations and portable;
 more easily attenuated, so best used for short range weather
observation;
 do not require as much power as S band radar;

4. X band radars
 operate on a wavelength of 2.5-4 cm and a frequency of 8-12 GHz;
 Because of the smaller wavelength,
 can detect the tiny water particles and thus used for studies on cloud
development and also used to detect light precipitation such as snow;
 attenuate very easily, so they are used for only very short range
weather observation;
 Most major airplanes are equipped with X band radar to pick up
turbulence and other weather phenomenon.

5. K band radars
 operate on a wavelength of 0.75-1.2 cm or 1.7-2.5 cm and a
corresponding frequency of 27-40 GHz and 12-18 GHz;
 similar to the X band but is just more sensitive;
 shares space with police radars;
