Word Equations

This document provides information and examples to help students write balanced word equations confidently from chemical reactions. It includes: 1. Examples of word equations and their reverse reactions for electrolysis of water and combustion of hydrogen and oxygen. 2. Practice writing word equations for 5 common reactions given the reactants and products. 3. More practice writing word equations for 3 example chemical reactions where some information is missing.

Word Equations

NL: Confidence in writing word equations from:

-Information about a reaction [C]
-Sentences talking about a reaction [C/B]
-Reactions with ‘missing bits!’ [B]
-Balanced equations [A]
How do we write the word equation for this?

Water  Hydrogen + Oxygen

Hydrogen + Oxygen  Water

Use the following information to make word equations –confidently!
1.The electrolysis of water makes hydrogen and oxygen.
2.The combustion of hydrogen and oxygen makes water.
3.The electrolysis of salt water (or sea water) makes chlorine and
hydrogen.
4.The combustion of carbon in oxygen makes carbon dioxide.
5.The combustion of glucose makes carbon dioxide and water.
OK, let’s try some exam-style questions! Write a word equation for the
following (example one is partly done to help you):
1.During an experiment carbon dioxide was produced by the
combustion of pure carbon.
Carbon + ________  Carbon Dioxide
2.When a reaction between Iron and Sulfur takes place the products is
Iron Sulfide, the reactants are Iron and Sulfur.
3.A scientist produced two gases by putting electrodes into water, one
was oxygen the other was hydrogen.
Use the following information to make word equations
–confidently!

•Water  Hydrogen + Oxygen

•Hydrogen + Oxygen  Water
•Sea Water  Chlorine + Hydrogen
•Carbon + Oxygen  Carbon Dioxide
•Glucose + Oxygen  Carbon Dioxide + Water

OK, let’s try some exam-style questions! Write a word equation for the following
(example one is partly done to help you):

1.Carbon + Oxygen  Carbon Dioxide

2.Iron + Sulfur  Iron Sulfide

1.Water  Oxygen + Hydrogen
