PRINCIPLES OF ART: 1. PATTERN
• Repeated combination of elements without
variation
• Recurring and regular arrangement
PRINCIPLES OF ART: 2. RHYTHM
• Continuance, flow or movement achieved
through repetition
• Three types
1. Regular- intervals are similar in size
and length
PRINCIPLES OF ART: 2. RHYTHM

• Three types
1. Regular- intervals are similar in size
and length
2. Flowing- intervals are organic

• Continuance, flow or movement achieved
through repetition
• Three types
1. Regular- intervals are similar in size
and length
2. Flowing- intervals are organic
3. Progressive- intervals are repeated with
more variation
PRINCIPLES OF ART: 2. RHYTHM
PRINCIPLES OF ART: 3. BALANCE
• Equality in various visual elements of art
• Major types:
1. Symmetrical- identical balance
PRINCIPLES OF ART: 3. BALANCE
PRINCIPLES OF ART: 3. BALANCE
• Equality in various visual elements of art
• Major types:
1. Symmetrical- identical balance
2. Asymmetrical- not identical but placed in
positions to create “felt” balance
PRINCIPLES OF ART: 3. BALANCE
PRINCIPLES OF ART: 4. EMPHASIS/CONTRAST

• Giving more importance to the other elements of

an art
PRINCIPLES OF ART: 5.
MOVEMENT
• Action or path that the eyes follow
PRINCIPLES OF ART: 6. UNITY/HARMONY

• Creates a sense of wholeness

• Combining similar elements together
PRINCIPLES OF ART: 7. VARIETY
