Vibrations and Its Types: Presented By: Er. Sahil Sharma Department of Civil Engineering

The document discusses different types of vibrations that structures experience from sources like earthquakes, wind, and machines. It covers periodic and non-periodic vibrations, as well as free and forced vibrations, linear and non-linear vibrations, damped and undamped vibrations, and more. The types of vibrations include longitudinal, transversal, torsional, deterministic, and random vibrations.

VIBRATIONS AND ITS TYPES

PRESENTED BY:
ER. SAHIL SHARMA
DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING
VIBRATIONS
 Vibrations is the motion of a particle or a body or a system
of concentrated bodies have been displaced from position
of equilibrium .

 The vibration in structural system may result from variety

of sources.

 Some example of this forces are wind, earthquake,

waterways , etc.

 Vibration is the study of repetitive motion of objects

relative to stationary frame of reference.
SOURCES OF VIBRATION
Structures are subjected to vibrative motion by earthquake, blast,
wind, moving loads, machines, and flow of water. The pattern of
vibrations of dynamic forces with respect to time consist of
mainly two types:

1. Periodic loading

2. Non- periodic loading

1. Periodic loading: The periodic loading in which exhibits
same time vibration successively for large no. of cycles. The
simple form of periodic loading is simple Harmonic motion
SHM. Example: Rotatory machine in a building and
propeller forces stern of a shape.

2. Non- periodic loading: The non-periodic loading in which

the loading does not exhibits same time vibration
successively i.e. It may be short duration or long duration. A
blast or explosion is a typical examples of impulsive load of
short duration and long duration loading may also result
from earthquake.
TYPES OF VIBRATIONS

 Following are different types of vibrations in a structural

system:

1. Free and forced vibration

2. Linear and non-linear vibration

3. Damped and un-damped vibrations

4. Longitudinal transversal and torsional

5. Deterministic and random vibration

1.FREE AND FORCED VIBRATION
 The vibration which persists in a structure after the force
causing motion has been removed is known as free
vibration.

 Example: oscillation of simple pendulum.

 The vibration which is maintained in a structure by

steady periodic force acting on a structure is known
forced vibration.
2.LINEAR AND NON- LINEAR VIBRATION
 If the basic components of a vibrating system namely
spring, mass and dampness behaves in a linear manner,
the result vibration caused are known as linear vibration.

 They should obey the law of superposition.

 If the basic components of a vibrating system behaves in

non-linear manner, the resulting vibration is called non
linear vibration.

 It does not follow law of superposition.

3. DAMPED AND UNDAMPED VIBRATION

 When a damper or damping element is attached to a

vibrating system, the motion of system will be oppose
by it and the energy of system will be dissipated In
system. This type of vibration is called damped
vibration.

 On the other hand, vibration generated by system

having no damping element is known as undamped
vibration.
4.LONGITUDINAL TRANSVERSAL AND TORSIONAL VIBRATIONS

 When the particles of a body moves perp. To axis of the shaft ,

the vibration creates are known as transverse vibration.

 If the mass of vibrating system moves up and down and

parallel to axis of shaft the vibration created are known as
longitudinal vibration.

 If the shaft gets alternatively twisted or untwisted on the

account of vibrating motion, such vibration are called
torsional vibration.
5. DETERMINISTIC AND RANDOM VIBRATION

 If the amount of excitation ( force or motion ) acting on a

vibrating system is completely known , the resulting vibration
are deterministic vibrations.

 When the amount of excitation is not completely known, the

resulting vibrations are known as random vibrations.
