Well Completion

Completed well
Well Completion
Common Tools

Production packer:

It used to seal the annulus between the tubing

and the production casing.

There are two types of packer either retrievable

or permanent.

No-go nipple:
It is just above the entry guide.
Its ID less than the ID of the tubing.
Well Completion
Common Tools

Blast joint:
It can be installed in the tubing opposite open and flow
perforations. and it has a large thickness.
To help prevent tubing damage from the jetting action of the zone
perforations.
Well Completion
Common Tools

Sliding sleeve door:

It can use to make a communication between the
tubing and the annulus.
Side pocket mandrel:
SPM are positioned in a completion to provide
an injection point for gas lift, chemical
Inhibitors or a circulation facility.
Flow coupling:
These are placed above and below safety valves or
restrictions within the tubing.
They are extra thick to withstand internal erosion
created by turbulent flow from restrictions
Well Completion
Common Tools

Subsurface safety valve (SSSV):

It used to shut-in the well if required or in the emergency case.

Landing nipples:
To provide a specific landing location for subsurface flow control
equipments, or to set the gauges.

DRILLING A WELL

1-Objective …
To provide a conduit (a hole) from the Sub-surface

Hydrocarbon bearing “Formation” to the Surface, so that

Oil and/or Gas may be recovered and produced.

TO DRILL A WELL YOU NEED:
 A CUTTING TOOL (BIT)
 A WAY TO DESCEND (DRILL PIPE)
 A PLACE TO HOLD THE PIPES
( DERRICK)
 A MEDIA TO REMOVE THE CUTTINGS
( MUD)
 A WAY TO ROTATE THE PIPE ( KELLY)
 A WAY TO RAISE & LOWER THE PIPE
(HOISTING SYSTEM)
 A COMPLETE SYSTEM TO

OPERATE, ORGANIZE
AND MANAGE ALL THE
ABOVE
(A DRILLING RIG)

4-Drill String Design

Drill String :
A combination of Bit, Drill Collars, Drill Pipe & drilling jar & stabilizers & shock
absorber & the kelly.

Stabilizers are
installed within the
column of drill
collars. To make the
bit in the straight
direction. and to
minimize the
bending of the
string.
Drill String Design
Reamer
Reamer is used to enlargement the hole.

5- Rotary Drilling Bits

Definition of the Bit :

The lowest part of the “Drill String” having a suitable cutting

structure to dig (drill) into the Formation & to make the Hole.

6- Mud Engineering
 Mud is the fluid that always used during drilling operation.
 It serves many purposes:

Cool and lubricate the bit and drill string.

Clean the hole bottom.
Carry cuttings to the surface.
Control formation pressure.
Minimize corrosion of the drill string, casing, and tubing.
Types of mud:
Oil base mud
Water base mud

7-Casing & Cementing Design

 Definitions
 Functions
 Operations
Casing

 Definition:

 The casing is used for protection (seals off adjacent

formations, prevents caving in) during all phases of
drilling and production.

So it is often designed to withstand many severe

operating conditions and to meet all potential
requirements.
Casing Design
 Casing design
Casing pipes are available in different grades or strengths, and are
usually designed for:

1- Collapse
2-Burest
3-Tension
