We Can Prove Success Through Quality Service

The document discusses noise and crosstalk in integrated circuits. It defines noise as undesired effects that can impact proper chip operation. Crosstalk is a type of noise caused by capacitive coupling between neighboring signals, where one signal is affected (the victim) by switching in another (the aggressor). This can cause glitches or changes in timing. The document outlines different types of glitches and factors that influence glitch magnitude. It also describes how crosstalk can increase or decrease delays during setup/hold analysis and provides some techniques for fixing noise issues.

Noise
Noise :
Undesired or unintentional effects affecting the proper operation of
the chip.
Why noise and signal integrity?
• Increasing number of metal layers
• Higher routing density due to finer geometry
• Faster waveforms due to higher frequencies
• Lower supply voltage

Noise
• The crosstalk noise is caused by the capacitive coupling between
neighbouring signals on the die.
• The affected signal is called the victim, and the affecting signals are
termed as aggressors.

Noise
Types of noise effects caused by crosstalk :
1.Glitch -coupling of switching activity of neighbouring aggressors,
2.Change in timing (crosstalk delta delay)-coupling of switching
activity of the victim with the switching activity of the aggressors.

Glitch
The magnitude of the glitch depends on these factors :
1. Coupling capacitance between the aggressor net and victim
2. Slew of the aggressor net
3. Victim net grounded capacitance
4. Victim net driving strength

Types of Glitches
1.Rise and Fall Glitches
2. Overshoot and Undershoot Glitches

Crosstalk Delay Analysis
Positive cross talk delay(slow down the victim transition)
• The aggressor net is rising at the same time when the victim net has a falling
transition
• The positive crosstalk impacts the driving cell as well as the interconnect - the
delay for both of these gets increased.

Crosstalk Delay Analysis
Negative cross talk delay (speed up the victim transition)
• The aggressor net is rising at the same time as the victim net
• The negative crosstalk impacts the driving cell as well as the interconnect -
the delay for both of these gets decreased.

Setup and Hold analysis
the setup (or max path) analysis assumes that:
• Launch clock path sees positive crosstalk delay so that the data is
launched late.
• Data path sees positive crosstalk delay so that it takes longer for the
data to reach the destination.
• Capture clock path sees negative crosstalk

Noise Fixing:

1. Applying NDR to the nets

2.Sheilding
3. Increase the Resistance of Victim driver (RV).i.e. downsize
the victim driver
4. Increase the Capacitance of Victim load (CV).i.e. upsize the
victim load
5.Fast slew rate
6. Maintain good stable supply
7.Isolating a block
