Permutation

Here are the steps to solve the permutations problems: 1. There are 4 resistors that can be arranged in series. Using the fundamental counting principle, the number of arrangements is 4!. So there are 4 * 3 * 2 * 1 = 24 ways to arrange the resistors. 2. For 3 letters A B C, the number of arrangements is 3!. So there are 3 * 2 * 1 = 6 ways to arrange the letters. 3. For 6 people arranging themselves in a single file, the number of arrangements is 6!. So there are 6 * 5 * 4 * 3 * 2 * 1 = 720 ways for them to arrange themselves.

Permutation
#OOTD
(Objective Of The Day)

1. Illustrate the permutation of objects.

2. List the possible ways a certain task or activity
can be done
3. Appreciate permutations as vital part of one’s
life.
 Permutations the number of ways in which a subset of an object
can be selected from a given set of objects, where order is
important.
 Permutations can be determined by listing, using table, tree
diagramming, and by using the Fundamental Counting
Principle.
For Example:
Given the set of three letters (A, B, C), how many possibilities are
there for selecting any two letters, where order is important?
Answer: (AB, AC, BC, CA, CB)
 FCP is used to calculate the total number of permutations in a given
situation. The principle may not tell what exactly those permutations are,
but it gives the exact number of permutations there should be. The FCP
tells that you can multiply the number of ways each event can occur.
For Example:
In how many ways can 3 people arrange themselves in a row for picture
taking?
Solution:
Using the FCP or Fundamental Counting Principle.
P(3)= 3!
= (3)(2)(1)
= 6 possible ways
Let’s do this!
Suppose that you secure your bike using a
combination lock. Later, you forgot the 4 - digit code. You
can only remember that the code contains the digits 1, 3,
4, and 7.
a. List all possible codes out of the given digits.
b. How many possible codes are there?
c. Use the Fundamental counting principle to check if the
number of permutations is correct.
THINK-PAIR-SHARE

A close friend invited Anna to her birthday party. Anna

has 4 new blouses (stripes, with ruffles, long sleeved and
sleeveless) and 3 skirts (red, pink and black) in her
closet reserved for such occasions.
1. Assuming that any skirt can be paired with any blouse,
in how many ways can Anna select her outfit? Show
your answer by listing the possibilities and using the
tree diagram.
2. How many blouse-and –skirt pairs are possible?
Directions: Illustrate the permutations of objects.
1. You want to order your lunch from the school
canteen, which offers student meals consisting of 1
cup of rice, 1 meat dish and 1 vegetable dish. How
many choices do you have for your meal if there are
3 choices of meat dishes and 2 choices of vegetable
dishes?
2. In how many ways can 5 people arrange
themselves in a row for picture taking?
Assignment:
Directions: Illustrate the permutations of objects.
1. In how many ways can 4 different resistors be arranged in
series?
2. Consider arranging 3 letter A B C. How many ways can this
be done?
3. Six people are about to enter a cave in a single file. In how
many ways could they arrange themselves in a row to go
through the entrance?
