Type Tools

Type Tool

 Used to place type (text) on your image.


 The text that you place on the image using
the type tool is stored in a special layer
called the type layer as a vector object.
 Since type is vector-based, you can change
its size without affecting its quality.
 Like other layers, you can apply layer style
and layer mask to the type layer.

Using the Horizontal or
Vertical Type Tool
1. Select the horizontal type tool or vertical type tool
in the tools palette.
2. On the tool option bar, select the font, font style,
font size, text alignment, and text color that you
want to be applied to the text. You can also set the
text color by clicking the color that you want in the
swatches palette.
3. Click on the area of the image in the document
window where you want to place the text. You will
notice a blinking cursor.
4. Type the text that you want to place on the image.

5. Select the text if you want to change text properties
such as font or font size. After selecting the text,
change the text properties in the tool option bar.
6. When you are already satisfied with the appearance of
the text, click the commit icon to finish the text editing.
7. You can change the location of the text using the move
tool. In the layers palette, click the type layer
containing the text that you want to move, then select
the move tool in the tools palette. Position the move
tool pointer within the area of the text then drag it to a
new location.

8. If you want to edit the text again, select
the type tool that you used in creating the
text (horizontal or vertical type tool), then
click within the area of the text that you
want to edit. You will notice the cursor
signifying that you can now edit the text.
Simply click the commit icon if you are done
with text editing.
Using the Horizontal or
Vertical Type Mask Tool
1. Create a new layer by clicking the Create a new layer
icon in the layers palette.
2. Select the horizontal type mask tool or vertical type
mask tool in the tools palette.
3. In the tool option bar, select the font, font style, font
size, text alignment, and text color that you want to be
applied to the text.
4. Click on the area of the image in the document window
where you want to place the text. You will notice a
blinking cursor. Also notice that the background
becomes pink.

5. Type the text that you want to place on the image.
6. If you want to change text properties such as font or font
size, just select the text then change the text properties in
the tool option bar.
7. When you are already satisfied with the text, click the
commit icon to finish the text editing. You can move the
selection while it is still active using the arrow keys. Also
take note that you cannot edit the text anymore once you
click the commit icon.
8. You can apply stroke, solid color fill, or gradient to the text
selection. You can apply a combination or all these effects
to the text selection.
Applying stroke (outline)
to the text selection

1. Select the color that you want to use as text


outline in the swatches palette. By default,
the Stroke command uses the foreground
color in creating the text outline.
2. Click [Edit]-[Stroke…] menu in the menu
bar.
3. In the Stroke dialog box, set the width and
location of the stroke. Then click the OK
button.
Applying gradient to
the text selection
1. Set your preferred foreground and background
colors if you will use the foreground to background
gradient fill.
2. Select the gradient tool in the tools palette.
3. On the tool option bar, click the gradient picker
dropdown list button, then select the foreground to
background preset. Also select the gradient style
that you like and set the blending mode to Normal.
4. Apply the gradient tool to the selection by dragging
it horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.
Applying fill to the text
selection
1. Set the foreground color that you like by clicking it on the
swatches palette. By default, the fill command applies a
solid color to the selection using the foreground color.
2. Click the [Edit]-[Fill…] menu in the menu bar.
3. In the fill dialog box you will be presented with options in
using other methods in filling the selection. Select other
value for the Use option if you do not like to use the
foreground color in filling the selection.
4. Click the OK button in the Fill dialog box to apply the fill
to the selection.

9. If you are already satisfied with effects that you
applied to the text selection, press [Ctrl]+[D]
([Command]+[D] on Mac) to deselect.
10. To change the location of the text, use the Move.

11. Since you placed the text in a separate layer, you


can also apply layer styles without affecting the
others area of the image. Simply select the layer
containing the text in the layers palette, then click
the Add a layer style icon, and then select the layer
style that you want to apply from the pop-up menu.
