LIKED DANCE IN THE COUNTRY,
DERIVED FROM THE SPANISH WORD
THAT MEANS “THE LOVING OR
AFFECTIONATE ONE”. THIS
COURTSHIP DANCE S CLOSELY
ASSOCIATED WITH THE PANAY
ISLANDS IN THE VISAYAS REGION
AND IS SAID TO HAVE HISPANIC
ORIGIN.
Maglalatik
The indigenous Maglalatik dance of Philippines
mimics the battle between the Christian and
the Muslim Moro tribesmen. Maglalatik is also
called as Magbabao where ‘bao’ means ‘a
coconut shell’. It is an all–male dance with
coconut shells used as props. The Maglalatik
embodies the element of a battle,
reconciliation and a prize as well.

Pandanggo sa Ilaw
is a very popular folk dance in the
Philippines. It is said to have originated from
Mindoro, the seventh-largest island in the
Philippines. The word pandanggo is from
the Spanish fandango, a dance in 3/4 time.
Binasuan is a Filipino dance style
which literally means “with the
use of drinking glasses”. This folk
dance is said to have originated
from the island of Luzon located
in the Philippines. This dance style
Binasuan is mainly performed during festive
occasions such as a marriage.
Furthermore, in this dance style
performers hold full wine glasses
in their hands while dancing.
Mindanao, home to the majority of the
Muslims in the country, is known for
its spirituality, royalty, and
splendor, which are evident to its
dances. Muslim dances are characterized
by colorful and elaborate costumes as
well as precise and regal movements.

Their most popular dances are the


Pangalay, Burung Talo, and Asik.

FRANCISCA R. AQUINO
1899 – 1983
• Year of Conferment: 1973
 One of the pioneers of Filipino folk dances.
She is a teacher, nationalist, and the first
Filipina to be awarded of the Order of the
National Artists for Dance. In the 1920s, Aquino
conducted research on Filipino dances by visiting
secluded districts and neighborhoods in the
islands of Luzon. Her 1926 thesis entitled,
“Philippine Folk Dances and Games” has been a
thorough guide to many educators and students in
understanding the different dances in the country.

Republic Award of Merit awarded by the former Pres.


Ramon Magsaysay
Cultural Award from United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
LEONOR O. GOQUINGCO
1917 – 2005
• Year of Conferment: 1976
 Also known as Cristina Luna, has been
dubbed as the Trailblazer, Mother of
Philippine Theatre Dance, and Dean of
Filipino Performing Arts and Critics.

 Her book, The Dances of the Emerald Isles:


A Great Philippine Heritage published 1980
covers comprehensive cross section of the
inestimable music and dance tradition of
the Filipinos.
RAMON OBUSAN
1938 – 2006
• Year of Conferment: 2006
 A dancer, choreographer, stage
designer, and artistic director. In
1972, equipped with valuable amount of
research and artifacts, Obusan
established the Ramon Obusan Folkloric
Group (ROFG), a dance company that
reflects the culture of Filipinos in
dance and music.
 The ROFG performed dance productions
and rituals from ethno linguistic and
indigenous groups including those from
natives of Cordillera, the Bagobo, the
Aeta, the Meranaw, and the T’boli.
LUCRESIA R. URTULA
1929 - 1999
• Year of Conferment: 1988
 The dance director of the Bayanihan
Philippine National Folk Dance
Company (now the Bayanihan Dance
Company), which is considered as the
oldest dance company in the country.
 She choreographed creative dances
based on her impressive research on
cultural dances. Some of her famous
recognized dances are the Singkil,
Vinta, Tagabili, Pagdiwata, and
Salidsid.
ALICE REYES
1942
• Year of Conferment: 2014
 The legendary founder of Ballet Philippines,
the country’s premier ballet dance company.
 Dancer and choreographer, she extensively
trained abroad at the Colorado College and
the Sarah Lawrence College.
 She received grants from the John D.
Rockfeller III Foundation and the Music
Promotion Foundation of the Philippines. She
is the favorite ballet productions such as
Cinderella, and Romeo & Juliet, and Filipino
works such as Amada, Itim-Asu, Bayanihan
Remembered, and Mga Babae.
