Precision Agriculture Concept (new technology)

•It is use of Right Input (nutrients, water, labor, money,

machinery, technology), in the rite way, at the right place and
at the rite time.

•It identifies and responds appropriately to the variability

within a field

•It is an environment friendly system which apply agricultural

inputs precisely according to the need of the soil to improve
chemical use efficiency and reduce the pollution from
agricultural field. It is also known as site-specific farming.
Objectives

• Increase profit
• Reduce waste
• Better and more homogeneous quality
• Maintain environment
Field Variability
Fast changers: Slow changers:
• nitrate level • topography
• moisture content • texture
• Pest population • pH
PA Include Many Components

Information Variable Rate Management

• Intensive soil/crop • Fertilizer and lime

sampling info • Seed rate
• Yield mapping • Plant populations
• Agrochemical • Pest control
applications • Organic amendments
• Weather data
Precision Agriculture Tools

• Global Positioning System (GPS)

• Geographical Information System (GIS)
• Variable Rate Technology (VRT)
• Yield Monitoring System (YMS)
GPS – Global Positioning System

– GPS provides specially coded satellite

signals that can be processed in a GPS
receiver, enabling the receiver to
compute position, velocity and time.
– Four GPS satellite signals are used to
compute positions in three dimensions
and the time offset.
– GPS is funded by and controlled by the
U. S. Department of Defense (DOD).

Geographical Information System (GIS)
• GIS is a system of hardware, software, procedure and
personnel to facilitate the
• management,
• manipulation,
• analysis,
• modeling,
• representation and,
• display
• of georeferenced data to solve complex problems
regarding planning and management of resources
• (Adapted from NCGIA, 1990)
Variable-Rate Technology (VRT)
• VRT consists of farm field equipment which apply
the precise quantity of crop inputs (tillage, seed,
fertizer, weed control, irrigation) at a precise location
in the field based on the individual characteristics of
that location.
• Components
• Computer Controller
• GPS receiver
• GIS map data
Yield Monitoring System (YMS)

• Yield monitors are crop measuring devices installed

on harvesting equipment. The yield data from the
monitor is recorded and stored at regular intervals
along with positional data from the GPS unit.GIS
software takes the yield data and produces yield maps

Outcome
• Improve crop yield
• Provide information to make better management
decisions
• Reduces chemical and fertilizer cost through more
efficient application
• Provide more accurate farm records
• Increase profit margins
• Reduce pollution
