Rotary Steerable System: Arsh Attri Anuj Bhatia

Rotary steerable systems (RSS) provide directional control of the drill bit from the surface. RSS use pads or a bent housing inside the drill collar to point the bit in the desired direction while continuously rotating the drill string. This allows for straighter wellbores compared to traditional bent sub and mud motor assemblies, which can result in spiral or tortuous well paths. RSS also offer benefits like better rate of penetration, reduced risk of differential sticking, improved hole cleaning, and higher quality boreholes.

De-merits of Bent Sub and Mud Motor
Assembly
• The drilling takes place in the sliding mode, typically creating
higher frictional forces in the drill string. In ERD, frictional force
build sup to the point, where no further drilling is possible.
• The rotation provided to the bit is provided by rotating the mud
motors, since it is not possible to rotate the entire drill string.
• Drilling with bent sub-motor assembly, in horizontal sections,
result in tortuous and spiral well path.
• In-efficient hole cleaning, resulting in lesser ECD.
RSS – Point the Bit
• The point the bit system uses the same principle employed in the
bent housing motor system. In the RSS, the bent housing is contained
inside the drill collar, so it can be oriented to the desired direction
during drill string rotation.
• Point the bit system claims to allow the use of a long gauge bit to
reduce hole spiraling and drill a straighter wellbore.

Push the bit Point the bit

RSS – Push the Bit
• These systems do not use bent subs for affecting hole angles. Changes
in hole angles are brought about by the action of three pads
contained within a non-rotating sleeve. The pads are kept in constant
contact with the formation by internal mud powered actuators. If no
angle change is required, the system is put in neutral mode by
pushing the pads in every direction thereby cancelling each other.
Positive Displacement Motor (PDM)
• A typical bent-housing PDM motor contains the following four
sections: dump sub, power unit, transmission/bent-housing unit, and
bearing section.
Turbine Motor
• Turbines, commonly known as turbo drills, are powered by a turbine
motor, which has a series of rotors/stators (stages) connected to a
shaft. As the drilling fluid is pumped through the turbine, the stators
deflect the fluid against the rotors, forcing the rotors to rotate the
drive shaft to which they are connected.
Benefits of RSS
• Directional control from surface
• Better rate of penetration
• Less risk of being differential stuck – Motor BHA stays non-rotated
while sliding
• Better hole cleaning
• Better borehole quality – Over-gauge hole by Mud motor BHA
• Minimum micro-dogleg due to sliding
