Quadratics: - by Rishit Dutta

Quadratics are polynomials with the highest power being 2. There are four main ways to solve quadratics: factorization, the quadratic formula, completing the square, and using facts about the relationship between the roots and coefficients. Factorization involves breaking the quadratic into two linear factors and setting them equal to 0. The quadratic formula is a set formula to solve any quadratic equation in the form ax^2 + bx + c = 0. Completing the square rewrites the quadratic as a perfect square trinomial before taking the square root. Some special quadratics and their solutions are also discussed.

QUADRATICS

-BY RISHIT DUTTA

WHAT ARE QUADRATICS

Quadratics
   are special trinomial or binomial with highest power 2 but not less or
more than that. That is why the general quadratic equation looks like:

This is the general form of the quadratics where a, b and c are numbers and a is not 0.
Other forms of quadratics are:
WAYS TO SOLVE QUADRATIC

There are 4 ways to solve quadratics:

1) Factorization
2) Quadratic formula
3) Completing the Square
Factorization is the process of breaking the quadratic down into two linear factors
and setting them equal to 0 and solving. As for the quadratic formula, there is a
certain formula to solve them. Completing the square means to rewrite a quadratic as
a perfect squares and solving them.
FACTORISATION

Factor and solve: x^2-5x+6=0

To factor this trinomial first find two numbers adding up to -5 and multiplying up to
6. We quickly find them as -3 and -2. there fore our factors are:
(x-3)(x-2)=0
You will then set each factor equal to 0 and solve for x each time.
X-3=0…. X=3
X-2=0….x=2
That is our two solutions!
FACTORISATION

Factor and solve: 2x^2-7x+3=0

Here directly we cannot use the sum and product method to factor but we will use it
anyway which will tell us how to split the x-terms. Two numbers with product 2*3=6
and sum -7 are -6 and -1. Therefore our quadratic will look like:
2x^2-6x-x+3=0
Or, 2x(x-3)-(x-3)=0……give us common factors
Or, (2x-1)(x-3)=0….our factors!
2x-1=0….x=1/2
X-3=0…..x=3
FACTORISATION

Factor and solve: x^2-x=0

Here if you notice carefully there is a common factor of x in each term. So our
factors are:
X(x-1)=0
Or, x=0
X-1=0…..x=1
Therefore our solutions are 0 and 1!
SOLVING QUADRATICS BY
QUADRATIC FORMULA
There
   is a certain formula which helps us solve quadratics more officially. The
formula is:

Where a is the coefficient of x^2, b is the coefficient of x and c is the constant term!
Let us go over a quick example to verify the formula.
QUADRATIC FORMULA EXAMPLE

Solve using quadratic formula: x^2-10x-31=0

Here a=1,b=-10,c=-31. By subbing into the formula, we get:
10±4square root(14)/2
Or, 5±2square root(14)
These are our roots satisfying our equation!
Completing the Square

This is the way to write quadratics as perfect square trinomials and solve them. Let
me go over the steps:
1) Divide by a and move constant to right side.
2) Add the quantity, (1/2 b)^2, to both sides.
3) Take square root of both side and solve.
COMPLETING THE SQUARE
EXAMPLE
Solve by completing the square: x^2-6x+5=0
Here a =1 so we can directly move constant to the right and add the special quantity.
When we do that we get this:
X^2-6x+9=4
(x-3)^2=4
X-3=±2……. Don’t forget the plus or minus!
X-3=2…..x=5
X-3=-2…..x=1
Therefore our solutions are 5 and 1!
LIST OF SPECIAL QUADRATICS

Here is a list of special quadratic equations:

1) x^2=x
2) X^2-x-1=0
Your assignment will be to solve them with factoring and quadratic formula,
respectively.
FACTS REGARDING QUADRATICS

If m and n are the two roots or zeroes of quadratic polynomial, then:

 m+n=-b/a
 mn= c/a
 1/m+1/n=-b/c
Your task will be to prove them using the two zeroes of the quadratic: ax^2+bx+c=0
