Effect of Type and Location of Shear Wall On Seismic Performance of RC Buildings

The document analyzes the effect of type and location of shear walls on the seismic performance of reinforced concrete buildings. It studies buildings without shear walls, with shear walls at the corner, mid-frame, and at the center core. Results show maximum storey displacement, drift and time period reduced by 62%, 58%, and 60% respectively in a building with a center core shear wall compared to one without. Base shear increased significantly by 252% with a core wall. The center core configuration performed best in resisting seismic loads.

INTRODUCTION ON SHEAR WALL

Shear wall is a structural component.

Shear wall resists the lateral loads like earthquake load, wind load.

CONCLUSIONS
• The dynamic response parameters such as maximum storey displacement,
maximum storey drift, and time period have been reduced considerably by 62%,
58%, and 60% in a building with shear wall located at core compared to that of a
building without shear wall.

• The dynamic response parameters such as base shear have been increased
significantly by 252% in a building with shear wall located at core compared to that
of a building without shear wall.

• Building provided with shear wall located at core shows a better performance
compared to that of buildings with shear walls located at corner and mid frame.

• Center core shear wall is best suited for resisting the seismic loads.
