IRC SP: 99 2013 Guidelines For Design For Expressway: Waim Akshay Ravindra

1) The document provides guidelines for the design of expressways, including considerations for planning, design, construction, and geometric design. 2) Key guidelines for geometric design include design speed, right of way width, lane width of 3.75m, median design, shoulder width of 3m paved and 2m earthen, and horizontal and vertical alignment designs. 3) Horizontal curves should be designed with the largest practical radius, and super-elevation should be limited to 7% if the radius is less than the desirable radius.

Guidelines for Design for

Expressway
Waim Akshay Ravindra
Expressways
• Expressway is an urban motorway which connects two major cities.
• With controlled access at large intervals, the accessibility is low whereas the
mobility is high.

General Considerations: Planning, Design &
Construction
• Carriageway provision and future widening
• Safety of Design
• Durability
• Mitigating disruptive effects of construction

VNR VJIET
Geometric Design
• Design Speed

• Right of Way (RoW)

VNR VJIET
Geometric Design
• Lane Width
• Standard lane width of 3.75m shall be provided

• Median
• The median shall be depressed or flushed
• The median width is the distance between the inner edges of the pavement
• Edge strip of 0.75m shall be provided in each direction

VNR VJIET
Geometric Design
• Shoulders
• The shoulders on the outer edge shall be 3m wide paved + 2m wide earthen
• Crossfall

VNR VJIET
Geometric Design
• Design of Horizontal and Vertical Alignments
• Horizontal Alignment
• Shall be fluent and blend with topography
• The horizontal curves should be designed with largest practical radius
• Super-elevation to be limited to 7 percent, if radius is less than desirable radius, 5% is max super-
elevation

*At locations where there is change in cross-

section (toll-plaza, interchanges, the SSD should
be at least Decision Sight Distance VNR VJIET
Geometric Design
• Design of Horizontal and Vertical Alignments
• Vertical Alignment
• There should be no grade change within 150m
• Vertical and Summit curves to be designed as Square Parabolas
