The Effects of Excessive Absenteeism on the Learning

Ability among Pupils of

Upper Tambler Elementary School II

Background of the Study:
Pupil absenteeism is a major concern
for every teacher in a school aiming for a
higher learning. Absences create a dead,
tiresome, unpleasant classroom
environment that makes pupils who
come to class uncomfortable and the
teacher irritable. (Marburger 2001).
Absenteeism disturbs the dynamic
teaching-learning environment and
adversely affects the overall well-being of
In quality terms, absenteeism is a
waste of educational resources, time and
human potential. Pupil absenteeism also
causes rework and wasted time for teachers
who spend class time re-teaching lessons
take instructional time away from pupils
who attend class regularly, and the extra
time spent going over absentee homework
and class assignments take time away from
teacher planning periods and time needed
to provide individual assistance.
Since it is our goal to reduce drop out
rate and raise the learning ability of our
pupils, this study is conducted to know the
causes of absenteeism as part of the
guidance program in order to formulate
some solutions to improve the attendance
of pupils in every grade level.
Statement of the Problem:

The aim of this study is to

investigate the extent of pupils
absenteeism of identified pupils of Upper
Tambler Elementary School II, explore
the reasons why pupil absent themselves
from classes and examine the
implications of student absenteeism.
Particularly it seeks to answer the
following questions?
1. What are the causes of pupils
absenteeism in the school?

2. What are the effects of pupils

absenteeism?

3. What are the strategies implemented

by the teachers to solve absenteeism
to improve learning outcome of
pupils?
Hypothesis:

1. The learning ability of the pupils will

improve If absenteeism will be addressed
thoroughly.

2. Absences of the pupils affect their

learning ability that will result to poor
academic performance
Theoretical Framework:

This study was based in the theory that

pupils who skip school a lot miss out on the
opportunity to gain a quality education,
absences weaken the learning ability of pupils
to function.

Students without adequate parental

supervision skip school to escape the boredom
or cope with depression, according to Linda L.
Williams. Others stay away from class because
of feelings of disconnectedness and inadequacy.
Review of Related Literature:
The issue of student absenteeism in
the school landscape has become a
complex educational, political and social
problem that is generating increased
interest among educators, researchers, and
policy makers. The problem of absenteeism
is becoming the concern of every member
of society since it has negative
consequences at both the individual and
social level.
For instance, studies carried by Bowen
(2005) have established that students who
attend classes more regularly seem to be
more successful in their studies than those
who frequently absent themselves. In a
related study, Baldacchino and Farrugia
(2002) examined the relationship between
class attendance and performance in the
context of agricultural economics classes
and confirmed that student absenteeism
resulted in lower grades.
Marburger (2001) also reported a
carefully designed study of attendance and
test performance among university
students. Students were significantly more
likely to answer incorrectly those test
questions covering material taught during
days on which the students were absent.
Contributing to the same debate, Reid
(2005)postulates that when students are
absent from school, there are a wide range
of short term educational consequences
that they face.
First and foremost, students miss out
on assignments. By missing out on
assignments, they are more likely to
underachieve or perform poorly in different
subjects. This discussion does not only view
absenteeism narrowly in terms of its
obvious negative impact on student
achievement and throughput rate but also
in terms of its social outcomes.
Conceptual Framework:

The purpose of this study is to

describe the causes of absenteeism its
effects to the learning ability of the pupils
and the possible solutions that may
contribute to the entire development of
the school performance.

Operational Definition:
For better understanding, the following
terms are herby defined in relation to the
problem of the study.
•Effect – refers to a result or change of something.
•Excessive Absenteeism – refers to a behavioral
pattern of absences from school. It has been viewed
as an indicator of poor performance and create gaps
in the pupil’s education.
•Learning Ability – refers to the ability to “catch on”
or understand instructions and underlying
principles; ability to reason and make judgment.
•Pupils – refers to a learner who is enrolled
in an educational institution under the
direct supervision of a teacher.

•Upper Tambler Elementary School II

This is a public school located at Brgy.
Fatima, General Santos City that offers
complete elementary education curriculum
where the study was conducted.
Guidance Counseling – The process of helping
individuals to discover and develop their
educational, vocational, and psychological
potentialities and thereby to achieve optimal
level of happiness and social usefulness.

Responsible Parenthood – refers to the

responsibility of the parents in caring and
supporting their children to attain the best
possible future.
Methodology:
Descriptive survey is probably the best
method which is available to use in
collecting data in order to allow the
researcher to gather more precise and
quantifiable information on the causes and
effects of absenteeism. It will allow the
researchers to get the data directly from the
subjects themselves by sitting with the
respondents and hear their views, voices,
perceptions and expectations in detail.
The respondent for this study will be
the identified absentees of each grade
level who are enrolled this school year
2011-2012. The main instrument to be
used is to solicit information through
questionnaires with open- ended and
closed questions to be used for data
collection by the guidance counselor.
The following steps may observe:

1. Identify potential absentee
a. By the teacher-adviser
b. By the guidance counselor
2. Provide specific period of counseling
a. Homeroom period
b. Counseling period
c. Parenting Seminar
3. Conduct assessment of Absentees
4. Conduct follow-up service
a. Home visitation
b. Parent/neighbor/co-teacher
consultation
5. Timeframe/Duration (June to October, 2011)
6. Implementation of the strategies
7. Consolidation of results
8. Analysis and Interpretation of the results
9. Findings
10. Conclusion
11. Recommendation
