Nsci-6100 Physics For Engineers 1: 4 - Temperature

This document discusses temperature conversion between Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin scales. It notes that water freezes at 0°C and boils at 100°C in the Celsius scale, and at 32°F and 212°F respectively in the Fahrenheit scale. Formulas are provided to convert between the scales, and examples are shown of converting 100°C to °F, 50°F to °C, and 100°F to °K through step-by-step solutions.

TEMPERATURE CONVERSION
Metric temperature units include
degrees Celsius and degrees Kelvin
(degrees Celsius plus 273.1). At sea level,
the freezing temperature of water is 0
degrees Celsius and the boiling point of
water is 100 degrees Celsius.

The temperature unit commonly used
in USA is Fahrenheit. At sea level, the
freezing temperature of water is 32 degrees
Fahrenheit and the boiling point of water is
212 degrees Fahrenheit.

SAMPLE PROBLEM
• Convert 100°C °F

Given : °C =100°C
Required : °F

Formula: °F = 9/5 °C + 32

AMACC-BATANGAS/Physics for Engineers 1

Solution:
°F = 9/5 °C + 32

°F = 9/5 100 °C + 32
°F = 1.8 100 °C + 32
°F = 180 °C + 32

°F = 212

• Convert 50 °F to °C

Given : °F = 50 °F
Required : °F

Formula: °C = 5/9 (°F - 32)

AMACC-BATANGAS/Physics for Engineers 1

Solution
°C = 5/9 (°F - 32)

°C = 5/9 (50 °F - 32)

°C = 0.555 (18 °F)

°C = 10

• Convert 100 °F to °K

Given : 100 °F
Required : °K

Formula :
°C = 5/9 (°F - 32)
°K = °C + 273.15

AMACC-BATANGAS/Physics for Engineers 1

Solution
°C = 5/9 (°F - 32)
°C = 5/9 (100°F - 32)
°C = 37.4

°K = °C + 273.15
°K = 37.4°C + 273.15
°K = 310.55
