This document discusses the qualifications and competencies for organic agriculture production. It outlines the core competencies required, which include raising organic chicken, producing organic vegetables, producing organic fertilizer, and producing organic concoctions and extracts. Elective competencies include raising organic hogs and raising organic small ruminants. The document also provides information on establishing a nursery, including selecting high quality certified organic seeds, considering factors for nursery site selection, and using a growing media with a 1:1:1 ratio of rice hull ash, compost or coco coir, and manures.

Upon completion of this unit of competency the students/trainees will be able to:
Identify and prepare nursery tools,
farm implements and simple equipment; Maintain nursery facilities; Handle seeds/planting material Prepare growing media Conduct propagation activities Learning Objective After the discussion, the student/trainees should be able to prepare growing media, select seeds, prepare seedbed, care and maintenance of seedling while in nursery area. Factors to consider in nursery site good water source well drained very accessible Seed Selections Seeds and planting materials shall be of high quality and certified organic, when available. non-organic seed and planting materials may be used provided that they have not been treated with pesticides and other inputs not permitted by this Standard The seeds that are used to cultivate new crops have to be selected very carefully and of high quality. There are several diseases that are transmitted via the seeds. If seeds from an infested field are used to grow the next crop, these seed-born diseases will immediately cause serious problems. Seed selection should thus start by obtaining seeds from healthy plants. Seed Selection Seeds and planting materials derived from tissue culture may be used for the production of organic, disease-free planting materials. The use of chemical treated seeds is when natural disaster like floods, drought, earthquake, pest outbreaks, or other unanticipated circumstances have occurred, causing the destruction of organic seed supply, only then can treated seeds be used. The use of genetically modified seeds or planting materials is not allowed Characteristics of quality good seeds free form mixture and damage certified variety physiological matured Techniques in breaking dormancy Drying hot water chemical treatment Importance of germination test to prepare the exact seed needed and to save money to determine the measured seed per unit area Characteristics of good growing media well drained high in WHC high in organic matter Component of good growing media Ratio of 1:1:1 rice hull ash compost/coco coir manures Ratio of 1:1:1 ratio rice hull ash compost/coco coir manures
