WHAT IS A HOSPITAL INFORMATION SYSTEM? (HIS)
A Hospital Information System (HIS) is one of the elements of health informatics
which manages the different aspects of the hospital operation, such as medical,
administrative, and financial issues.
It is a comprehensive software that handles the integration of the information
related to the patients between wards in order to efficiently process patient care.

EVOLUTION OF HOSPITAL INFORMATION SYSTEM
(HIS)
The Hospital Information Systems began in the 1960s when large hospitals started
acquiring mainframe computers to take care of their business functions. Since then it has
evolved with the modernization of the healthcare industry.

BENEFITS OF HAVING HOSPITAL INFORMATION SYSTEM (HIS)
The need for a hospital system is brought about by the complexity of the hospital as
an organization, and increased volume of information gathered from the various
departments on a daily basis.
The benefits of having an HIS include:
(1) The information are easily accessible.
(2) Clerical and transcription error are minimized.
(3) Improves the quality of patient care.
(4) Enhances the information integration between departments.
(5) Reduction of cost.
(6) Improves hospital management.

HOSPITAL INFORMATION SYSTEM (HIS) IN THE PHILIPPINES
The current state of health information systems closely reflects the larger health
system. The national and local health information systems are poorly integrated and are
weakly governed (Marcelo, 2005).
Private sector information is not part of the DOH systems which is partly due to the
weak information sharing regulations and preference for proprietary software.

HOSPITAL INFORMATION SYSTEM (HIS) IN THE PHILIPPINES
There are information gaps both at local and national levels with the lack of standards
as a major issue. Even vertical disease surveillance systems have redundancies and
duplications. Some of these systems include the :
a.NDRS, FHSIS or Notifiable Disease Reporting System of the Field Health Service
Information System;
b.NESSS or National Epidemic Sentinel Surveillance System;
c.EPISurv or Expanded Programme on Immunization diseases targeted for eradication or,
Elimination Surveillance System; and
d.IHBSS or Integrated HIV/AIDS Behavioural and Serologic Surveillance System.
