Single Phase Motor

Single phase motors cannot start on their own because a single phase cannot generate a rotating magnetic field or starting torque. They are modified to have two phases by adding a second winding and capacitor to create phases and generate a rotating magnetic field for starting torque. The second winding is the starting winding used for motor initiation while the first winding is the main running winding.

Single Phase Motor

Single phase motor cant' start by own

because single phase can't generate
rotating magnetic field or starting
torque.
 So single phase motor modified in two phase by
introducing one more winding.Capacitor introduced
in the second winding to create two phase. This two
phase winding will generate rotating magnetic field
and starting torque.Second winding will called
starting winding which is for starting the motor and
first winding or main winding called running winding
Reversing Single-Phase Induction Motor

 To reverse Single-phase induction motor we

need to interchange the direction of the rotating
magnetic field produced by the main and starter
windings. And this can be accomplished by
reversing the polarity of the windings
Running winding and Starting winding

 Winding with having high resistance but

low inductive reactance is known starting
winding where as the winding having high
inductive reactance but low resistance is
known as running winding.
