Exercise
Format the page to display the map in A4 formant
and in landscape.

In ArcGis, Add the shape file


“Afria_BaseMap.shp”. When the map is displayed,
save it under the name “Africa02”. In View, click
on Data Frame properties to project your map in
WGS 1984 and set the scale in kilometers

At the end in Data view you Should obtain the
map as shown

We want to rename the
layer “Africa_BaseMap”
to read “African continent

Right click on the layer of Africa_BaseMap and
click on Properties

Look for the tab “General”, locate Layer Name
and type “African continent”

Right click on the “African continent”, then
click on “Open Attribute Table”.

When the attribute table opened, locate, “Table
options” and look for “Joins and Relates”

In “Joins and Relates”, select “Join”.
Joining data is typically used to append the fields of one table to
those of another through an attribute or field common to both tables.

Remember you have been provided a data file “Country_Pop” which
contains the same field “CNTRY_NAME” than the layer in use

Select CNTRY_NAME
Choose
“Country_Pop.dbf
Select CNTRY_NAME

After filled all the requested field, complete
your task by clicking on “OK”

Alternative is offered to you, as we are not building
a geodatabase, let us choose the default selection
“No”.

The fields of Country Pop were added (appended)
to the attribute table. Close the attribute table

African Continent, Look for Data and create a
shapefile “Africa_Pop” to be save in “Africa”
subfolder

You have created the Shape file “Africa Pop” which is
displayed below. Click on “African continent” and right
click to open the attribute table.

When the attribute table opened, “click on Table Options”
click “Joins and Relates”, Looks for Remove Join(s) and
select remove Country Pop.

The fields appended to the attribute table were removed.
Close the attribute table.

Right click on the layer African continent, select “Properties”
then click on the tab of Labels, check the Label features in the
layer (1), Select the appropriate field label (2), set the size to 6 (3)
and then Apply (4)

Click on Symbology (1) then click on Symbol (2), Remove the
color (3), Set the outline width to 2 (4), set the outline color to
black (5), complete task with OK (6)

Back to your map, select Africa_Pop and right click on it
to select “Open Attribute Table”

When “Attribute Table”, click on the head
CNTRY_NAME which is on of the two variable appended
(added) by join to select it.

Right click on the head CNTRY_NAME which is
duplicated, go to Delete Field and click on it.

Confirm the Action to delete the field selected by clicking
on “Yes”, then close the Attribute Table

Back to your map, Right click on the layer of Africa_Pop
then select “Properties as shown below.

When the Layer Properties opens, Select Symbology (1), in
Quantities, select Graduated Colors (2), Change the Fields
value to read Lifeexp21 (3), leave or set classes to 5 (4)

Under Range, create five categories by clicking on the
numbers below Range (1); then Under Label Assign a
name to each category (2)

The task you performed will show as below. Conclude
task by clicking on “OK”.

Your map will be displayed and shows the distribution
of the countries in five categories.

To improve the reading of your map, you may consider to
change the color of the countries with a life expectancy in 2014
≥ 61 years
