OSPF Presentation.

OSPF is an interior gateway protocol that uses link-state routing. It was first introduced in 1987 and has gone through several versions. OSPF routers build and maintain a link-state database containing LSAs received from other routers. This database is used by the Dijkstra SPF algorithm to create an SPF tree and populate the routing table. OSPF uses router IDs, LSAs, and the SPF algorithm to exchange routing information within autonomous systems.

OSPF?
OSPF ALGORITHM
OSPF routers build & maintain link-state database containing
LSA received from other routers

upon execution of create SPF tree populate routing table

LSA (Link State Advertisement)

IGP (Interior Gateway Protocol)

LSDB (link State DataBase)

DR (Designated Router)

BDR (Backup Designated Router)

AS (Authonomous System)
Types of OSPF Link-State

To enable OSPF on a
router use the following Router(config-router)
command #network network-
address
R1(config)#router ospf
wildcard-mask area area-
process-id
id
Process id
• A locally significant number
between 1 and 65535
ROUTER ID
This is an IP address used to identify a router

3 purposes for deriving the router ID

Use IP -Takes precedence over loopback and physical interface

address addresses
configured
with OSPF
router-id
command If router-id command not used then router chooses highest
IP address of any loopback interfaces

If no loopback interfaces are configured then the highest IP

address on any active interface is used
ROUTER ID
OSPF Router ID

Commands used to verify current router ID

• Show ip protocols
• Show ip ospf
• Show ip ospf interface

Router ID

Router ID -Highest loopback address will

be used as router ID if router-
& id command isn’t used
Loopback
addresses -Advantage of using loopback the loopback interface
address cannot fail  OSPF
stability
ROUTER ID

The OSPF Introduced in IOS 12.0

router-id
command Command syntax

Router(config)#router ospf process-id

Router(config-router)#router-id ip-address

Modifying Use the command Router#clear ip ospf
