Advances in Tube Testing Technologies

December 2008
Table of Contents
 New Remote Field probe series
 New Near Field probes
 New Probe Adaptors
 New Accessories
 Improved software and documentation

2
Remote Field Technique
 Through-wall transmission technique
 Basic design: one driver coil and two pickup coils
 Direct field is rapidly attenuated with distance while the indirect field is diffused
outward through the tube wall
 Remote field = distance greater than 2 tube diameters

3
New Remote Field Probe Series
 3 New series, to replace TRA, TRB models
– Single Driver “TRA” is replaced by improved “TRS” series
– Dual Driver “TRB” is replaced by improved “TRX” series
– New model “TRT”: dual pickup
– Note: Boiler probe series “TRC” remains unchanged… for now!

4
Single Driver « TRS » series – 1/2
 Preferred as a general purpose probe for wall loss detection
 Clear response on wall loss and erosion-type defects
 Probe is optimized for easy ABSL interpretation
 2 Channels: Absolute (ABSL) and Differential (DIFF)
 Probe is blind to small defects (pits) on near side of support

5
Single Driver « TRS » series – 2/2

6
Dual Driver « TRX » series – 1/2
 Used when pitting is expected in the tubes
 2 Drivers, switchable Lead/Both/Trail
 2 Channels: Absolute (ABSL) and Differential (DIFF)
 Probe is optimized for easy DIFF interpretation
 Clearer response to small defects (pits) even on both sides of the support plate
 ABSL data is more difficult to analyse than with a Single Driver

7
Dual Driver « TRX » series – 2/2

8
Dual Pickup « TRT » series – 1/2
 Used when defects are expected at the tubesheets
 4 Channels: Lead set (ABSL/DIFF) and Trail set (ABSL/DIFF)
 Combines advantages of both Single and Dual Driver models
 Data analysis is longer and requires experienced users

9
Dual Pickup « TRT » series – 2/2

10
Oversized Probes (28 mm +)
 Single Driver TRS series

 Dual Driver TRX series

 Dual Pickup TRT series

11
Featured improvements (1/4)
 Improved mechanical resistance: thicker probe casing
 Flat tip to avoid the probe to get stuck in the tube

 Preamplifier and
electronics: better
S/N ratio

12
Featured improvements (2/4)
 Higher Differential signal clarity – less background noise for quicker analysis
 Sharper Absolute signals – more similarity between driver and receiver effect
signals

13
Featured improvements (3/4)
 Better signal resolution – reduced “averaging effect” for better distinction of
individual defects

14
Featured improvements (4/4)
 Improved detection capability – especially the Dual Driver model with help of
the DIFF channel

15
Near Field Technique
Idealfor fin fan carbon steel tubes
Excellent detection of internal corrosion, erosion and axial cracking
NOT for detecting OD defects

16
Near Field probe features
 High-quality amplitude-based signals for fast and simple data analysis
 Thick probe casing and flat probe tip
 No need for reference probe or extension

ABSL channel

DIFF channel

17
Near Field probe real signals
 Real corroded tubes pulled from service

18
Probe Ordering
Part number example:
Improved dual driver RFT probe, 13 mm diameter, 300 Hz center
frequency and with a 20-m nylon cable.

19
New Probe Adaptors
 For competitor ECT, RFT and MFL probes into MS5800
 Longer list available from Tube Probe Catalogue

 Others available soon! Custom requests available.

20
NEW! Reverse Probe Adaptors
 To connect OLYMPUS Remote and Near field probes into competitor
instruments
 Compatible with all TR_series probes
 Zetec MIZ-28 w/o RFT amplifier box
 CoreStar OMNI-100 and OMNI-200

 Others available soon! Custom requests available.

21

 Latest revision: 6.0R7
 Latest fixes: Windows Vista (ECT/RFT/MFL)
 IRIS fix for Windows Vista to come very soon with
6.0R8
 Next project: 6.1 and 6.2 versions

22
Overview
 New versions to come: 6.1 and 6.2
 Both versions support the MS5800
 Split in 2 development phases to get stable
versions quicker to customers
 Version 6.1 focuses on existing customers with
long-awaited improvements
 Version 6.2 focuses on “American” market – ECT
users and analysts

23
MultiView 6.1 – Strip charts
 “Real paper” strip chart addition vs. existing “R/D
Tech” strip charts

“R/D Tech” style: pen is moving, data “Real paper chart” style: pen is still but
is still. T = 0 at top of screen. the whole data scrolls. T = 0 at bottom
24
of screen.
