Basic Properties of Elastic

The Basic Properties of Elastic
Materials
 Stress (force)
The internal distribution of
the load, defined as
force per unit area

 Strain (deflection)
The internal distortion
produced by the load,
defined as deflection per
unit length

The Basic Properties of Elastic
Materials
 Strength Strength = stiffness x range

The maximum load that

the material can resist
 Proportional limit (PL):
point at which permanent
deformation is first
observed
 Yield strength (YS): point
at which deformation of
0.1% is measured

The angle of the slope gives the modulus of

elasticity (E) of the wire

05/07/20
Spring back (elastic recovery)
 Distance wire bends elastically before permanent
deformation

 Depends on yield point and E

 ↑in NiTi,↓in SS

• Wires with↓stiffness have↑elasticity

• Their slope is close to horizontal 05/07/20
 When the EL is
exceeded, permanent
deformation of the wire
occurs

 When the UTS is

reached, the molecular
structure of the wire is
broken down and the
wire fails

05/07/20
Stiffness
Reciprocal of springiness
High in SS, low in NiTi

* Wires with↑stiffness show a steeper slope

*↑ force is required to bend them

05/07/20
Range

A measure of how far a wire can be bent

without exceeding the limits of the material, or
how far a wire can potentially move a tooth by
a single adjustment; assuming the force was
adequate

05/07/20
Range

 The distance that the

wire will bend elastically
before permanent
deformation occurs

 The wires with↑working

range are those that can
work for long periods
with a single activation*

e.g. Superelastic NiTi and TMA wires (Titanium-molybdenum alloy)

05/07/20
Range

 If the wire is deflected

beyond its YS, it will not
return to its original
shape

 Clinically useful spring

back will occur unless
the FP is reached
