Working With Tiles
Working With Tiles
as mathematical
manipulatives that allow
students to better
understand ways of
algebraic thinking and
the concepts of algebra.
There is no need to
have different colors
among the positive
tiles.
The positive tiles could
all be of one color.
The negative tiles
should all be red.
Addition
Show 3 + ( -5 ) = -2
Rules for
Adding Integers
Adding two
positive integers
always yields a
positive sum
Adding two
negative integers
always yields a
negative sum
To find the sum of a
positive and a negative
integer
1. Take the absolute
value of each integer
2. Subtract these values.
3. Take the sign of the
integer with the larger
absolute value.
Adding Integers using
Algebra Tiles & Rules
1.) 5 + (-4)
2.) 10 ,+ (-5)
3,) -3 + 5
4.) 4 + (-12)
5.) -5 + 5
Write a numerical expression for
each model. Then find the sum. Let
each white tile equal +1 and each
black tile equal -1. Use the Rules for
Adding Integers to find each sum.
1.) 5 + (-4) 4.) 4 + (-12)
2.) 10 + (-5) 5.) -20 + 5
3,) -3 + 5 6.) -5 + 5
Write each subtraction as an equivalent
addition. Then use the Rules for Addition to
find the sum.
16) 2 – 5
17) 10 – 3
18) -5 – 5
19) 7 – (-2)
20) 0 – 25
21) 0 – (-3)
22) -4 – (-5)
23) 12 – (-12)
