Photoshop Lesson 1 - The Digital Image

The document discusses digital images, defining pixels as tiny squares that compose an image, and image resolution as the density of pixels that determines quality and file size. It explains that raster images are composed of pixels captured by devices like cameras, while vector images use mathematical formulas to define points, shapes, and curves that can be enlarged without quality loss. Key differences between raster and vector images are also outlined regarding file size, tone, and common uses.

Lesson 1

The Digital Image

CHESTER M. APOSTOL
Photoshop Instructor
Lesson Objectives
 Define pixels
 Define image resolution
 Describe how image resolution affects
the image file size
 Define pixel dimension
 Explain the relationship of image
resolution, pixel dimension and image
quality
 Differentiate raster from vector image
What are Pixels?
 Short for picture elements.
 Refer to tiny squares that
composed a digital image.
 A digital image contains
thousands or millions of pixels
arranged closely together.
 Not noticeable in normal view.
What are Pixels?

Image in Normal View Magnified Image

Image Resolution
 The density of pixels packed in a particular image.
 The higher the resolution, the more pixels there
are in the image.
 The higher the resolution, the better the quality of
the image.
 The higher the resolution, the larger the image we
can produce.
 The higher the resolution, the larger the file size
of the image will be.
 Measured in pixels per inch (ppi) or dots per inch
(dpi).
Image Resolution

 For print, 300 ppi is the

standard image
resolution.
 For screen, 72 ppi is
sufficient already.
Pixel Dimension
 It specifies the width and height of the image in pixels.
 To produce good quality image at a larger size, the
image must have high resolution and pixel dimension.
 To determine the ideal size of the image, simply divide
the width and height (pixel dimension) of the image by
the image resolution.

1500 pixels divided by 300 ppi = 5 inches

2100 pixels divided by 300 ppi = 7 inches
Pixel Dimension
 To determine the required pixel dimension
for a specific image size you will simply
multiply the resolution with the width and
height (image size in inches) of the image.

300 ppi X 8 inches = 2400 pixels

300 ppi X 10 inches = 3000 pixels
Pixel Dimension
 To determine the total number of pixels
in the image, multiply the pixel
dimension (width x height) of the image.

Pixel dimension:
Width = 2400 pixels
Height = 3000 pixels

2400 x 3000 pixels = 7,200,000 pixels or 7.2 MP

4 MP 2240 x 1680 7 x 6 inches

Raster versus Vector Image
 Raster Image:
– Composed of pixels.
– Produced using digital imaging devices such as a digital camera and a
scanner or a raster image editing software such as Adobe Photoshop.
 Vector Image:
– Composed of points, shapes, lines or curves which are defined by a
mathematical formula.
– Composed of flat or solid colors.
– Can be enlarged or magnified indefinitely without degrading the
quality of the image.
– Created using vector-based drawing software such as Adobe
Illustrator.
