A PRESENTATION
Designing of power system protection model for transient faults using MATLAB SIMULINK.
The main equipment used are the phase breaker and relay. These two components work
hand in hand.
Relay is a sensing device while breaker is a tripping device, which isolates an unhealthy
equipment during fault.
When current through the relay coil is greater than pickup value,it gets engerized in
turn producing a magnetic field.
This magnetic field changes the contact configuration from NC to OC or vice versa.
This in turn completes the breaker circuit
As the current flows through trip coil, the breaker trips the circuit by pulling the lever
Thus the system is protected by isolation.
As the fault considered is transient,it gets cleared within short duration and the system
again.
METHODOLOGY
Here we have developed a symetrical system taking 2 three phase source and
distributed parameter line.
For the relay,we have developed an overcurrent relay which gets activated when the
current is above a pickup value.
The pickup value here is 700A
Using D latch ,XNOR,AND ,NOT logical operators the relay is developed.
The output of this relay applies to the breaker employed across the lines.
Here the RLC is considered
Along the Y-axis we have current and along X – axis its the time.
The fault is applied at 0.2s.
Till 0.5s the current through the system becomes zero as the system is isloated.
But the fault being transient, its gets cleared and again the system is retored after 0.3s.
LL,LLG,LLLG AND LLL faults have been carried out.

CONCLUSION
Through the above Simulink model we were able to protect the system from transient
faults. We had considered all 4 faults cases like LL,LLG,LLLG AND LLL fault.
In all these cases the system was cut off for a duration of 0.3sec from 0.2sec to
0.5sec,while the fault occured at 0.2sec.
And the system got restored ,which is a characteristic of the transient fault.
