General Purpose Computer
 It can perform variety of task by using different
software installed on it.
 They can perform more than one task simultaneously.
 We can installed and uninstalled the program as per
our requirement.
 General purpose computer have high speed and large
memory.
 It can be used in different fields like- Colleges , Bank,
Office etc.
 Ex. Desktop, Laptop , Tablet
Special Purpose Computer
 It is designed to perform special purpose task.
 These type of computer can perform single
dedicated task.
 User can not add and remove the program on
this computer.
 These type of computer are designed to
perform the operation rather than store the
program and data.
 Drawback of this computer are versatility.
Difference
General Purpose Computer Special Purpose Computer
 It can perform various  It can perform only one
task dedicated task
 User can installed and  User can’t installed and
uninstalled the program uninstalled the program
 It can store large  These computer have
amount of data very low storage
 These computer are capacity.
used in home ,bank and  These computer are
office used in special field
On the basis of functionality

 On the basis of functionality(data/signals)

there are three types of computer.
 Analog

 Digital

 Hybrid
ANALOG COMPUTER
 Analog computer process analog data which is
continuous on nature like temperature , pressure ,
voltage etc.
 Analog computer is the type of special computer.
 Analog computers do not require any storage
capability because they measure and compare
quantities in a single operation.
 Ex. CT Scan machine MRI machine
DIGITAL COMPUTER
 Digital computer are work on digits to represent
any kind of data.
 Digital computer works on digital signal which
have in the form of ON and OFF
 ON is represented by 1 and OFF is represented by 0
 Result of digital computer is more accurate than
analog computer.
Hybrid Computer
 Hybrid computer are the combination of
Analog and Digital computers.
 They have capability to work on both analog
and digital signals.
 Hybrid computer can convert analog signal to
digital signal and digital signal to analog
signal.
 These compute are mostly used in weather
forecasting , Space research , artificial
intelligence and computer aided
manufacturing.
Difference Between Analog and Digital

ANALOG COMPUTER DIGITAL COMPUTER

1. It work on analog 1. It work on digital signal

signal. 2. It has high accuracy
2. It has low accuracy 3. Low cost
3. High Cost 4. Re-programmed is
4. Re-programmed is not possible
possible
Some Advantage and Disadvantage of
Analog computer
Advantage
They show the output in simple graphical manner in little
time.
Disadvantage
These computers are not versatile and also
The output of analog computers are not very accurate
On The Basis of Size

Micro Computer

Mini Computer
Size
Mainframe Computer

Super Computer
Micro Computer
Micro computer are those computer which work
on microprocessor. It is the smallest general
purpose computer and a single user can use this
computer at a time.
Ex. Desktop ,Laptop , Tablet , Smart Phone.
Key points.
1. Use microprocessor

2. Single user computer

3. Small in size
Mini Computer
 Mini computer is large than micro computer. It is a
powerful multiuser computer system with
excellent processing speed and memory. It is
capable to handle 4 to 200 user simultaneously.
These computer are used by small to medium size
business and industries to process there data.
Key points
1. It is a multiuser computer system

2. High processing speed and memory

Mainframe Computer
 Mainframe computer is large in size and one of
the powerful computer system. Mainframe
computer can handle thousand of user
simultaneously. These computer can execute
billions of instruction per second. Mainframe
computer are operated by trained user and
these computer are kept in air conditioned
rooms. These computer are used in large
companies like gas and electricity and airlines.
Super Computer
 Super computer are the fastest, largest and
most expensive computer in the world. They
have extremely large storage capacity and
processing speed is at least 10 time faster than
mainframe and computer. Usually such
computer uses parallel processor.
 Due to high cost and size it is relatively rare.it
is used by only large corporations and
government agencies, mainly the areas of these
computer is defense and space administration,
nuclear research and study of DNA structure
