What is a firewall?

It is a computer system, hardware or software ,

designed to prevent unauthorized access to or
from a private network.

You can think of it as a security guard that

decides who enters or exits the building.
Importance of having a Firewall

Having a firewall activated on your

computer protects your data from being
attacked by hackers, viruses, worms etc.
In education, Firewall acts like a barrier that
protects important documents from hackers
that can download student information, exam
questionnaires, Grading sheets or any files
that is considered confidential.
Activating firewall also prevents access to
sites and application not appropriate to a
school environment, and to help prevent sites
or applications that act as a source of
distraction for students.
Open source Software
What is an Open source software?
is a type of computer software in which source
code released under a license in which the
copyright holder grants user the rights to study,
change and distribute the software to anyone
and for any purpose.
Open-source software (OSS) for schools, may be
defined as a potent tool that makes it easy for
students, parents, and school administrators to
access software without the need to buy expensive
licenses or to download, sometimes illegally,
program. Open-source software is an "operating
system and/or applications software for which the
code is open ”for alteration by the public", easily
manageable databases, advanced spreadsheet tools,
and other presentation uses that are comparable with
Microsoft tools like Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
Best of all, open-source software comes completely
free of charge.
O It is reported that using OSS will reduce
licensing costs for schools. For instance, the cost
per computer at the primary school level for OSS
schools may be 50% of that of non-OSS schools,
and the cost per computer at the secondary
school level will be nearly 20% less than that of
the non-OSS schools. Apart from the cost aspect,
there are other non-monetary benefits like the
freedom to opt for the right type of software the
school needs, greater participation and
involvement in project community, and the
feasibility of using the same platform within and
outside of the schools.
What’s the difference between
open source software and other
types of software?

Some software has source code that only the

person, team, or organization who created it-and
maintains exclusive control over it-can modify.
People call this “Closed source” software.
Why do people prefer using Open
Source?

Control – Many people prefer open source

software because they have more control over
that kind of software.

Training – since Open Source is publicly

accessible, students can easily study it.
- Open Source software is available for the general public
to use and modify from its original design free of charge.

CLOSED SOURCE
SOFTWARE
What is a Closed Source Software?

Examples of Closed Source Software:

Microsoft office
Adobe photoshop
Windows OS
Closed Source Software means company that
developed the software owns the software and no
one may duplicate or distribute it without that
company’s permission.
- At first glance it may seem that open-source software has more
benefits since its often free but price isn’t the only consideration
when choosing a software. Here are some benefits of using a
closed source software:

Functionality
-Closed source is always up to date since your paying professional
people to take care of the software.

Appealing to Users
- Closed-source software is built with users in mind. Not only is it
more user friendly to use, but they also don’t require any technical
knowledge unlike open source if you put a layperson in front of
open source software, they may not be able to use it properly
Security
When it comes to security, closed-source software
is usually 1 or 2 steps ahead of open-source
software. The appeal of open-source software is
the fact that anyone can alter the code. And
because the software is meant to be played with at
its core, it makes it more vulnerable to hacking.
Technical Support
- Closed-source software offers ongoing
technical support for its users. This goes back
to the assumption that users aren’t necessarily
tech savvy and need assistance from time to
time. Open-source software still provides some
support, but it usually comes in the form of
documentation and experiences from other
users.
Is Closed-Source Software Right for you?
There is nothing wrong with choosing either
open- or closed-source software for your
document management software. But how can
you figure out which one is right for you?

Is security important to you?

Do you need assistance or technical support?
Do you need software that’s easy to use?
