Components of The Management Information System: Week.5

The document discusses components of the management information system and IT infrastructure. It covers: 1. The evolution of IT infrastructure from 1930 to 2007 including the electronic accounting machine era, general-purpose mainframe era, personal computer era, client/server era, and enterprise internet computing era. 2. Key components of IT infrastructure including computing platforms, telecommunication services, data management services, application software services, physical facilities management services, and IT management services. 3. Factors a firm should consider when deciding how much to invest in IT infrastructure such as integrating legacy systems, providing consulting services, and implementing relevant business changes.

Armstrong / MIS / Week.5

What is networking
A computer network is a telecommunication network
that allows computers to transfer and exchange data.

IT Infrastructure
1. Computing Platforms providing computing services.
2. Telecommunication Services
3. Data Management services
4. Application software services
5. Physical facilities management services
6. IT Management, standard services, education, and research
and development.
Components of a Simple Computer Network

A network switch is a hardware device that centralizes

communications among multiple connected devices in
one LAN. This happens through inspecting incoming
messages as they received and directing them to a
specific communication port.

Illustrated here is a very simple computer network, consisting of computers, a network

operating system residing on a dedicated server computer, cable (wiring) connecting the
devices, network interface cards (NIC), switches, and a router.

Eras in IT Infrastructure Evolution
PCs – Client / Server – Enterprise Integration

• Personal computer era: 1981 to present

• 1981 Introduction of IBM PC

• Proliferation in 80s, 90s resulted in growth of personal software

• Client/server Era: 1983 to present

• Desktop clients networked to servers, with processing work split between clients and servers
• Network may be two-tiered or multitiered (N-tiered)
• Various types of servers (network, application, Web)

• Enterprise Internet computing era: 1992 to present

• Move toward integrating disparate networks, applications using Internet standards and enterprise
applications

Enterprise Computing
Infrastructure Components
• Networking and telecommunications equipment and services

• Enterprise and other IT software applications

• Computer hardware platforms

• Consulting services and system integrators

• Operating system platforms

• Database management and storage

• Internet platforms
Cloud (i.e. internet) Computing means storing and
accessing data and programs over the internet instead of a
computer hard drive.

Cloud Computing does not require a

hardware of server in residence. All data are
exchanged and synced between the
home/office network over the internet.

Cloud Computing is used by companies through using Software

as a service where a business can use an application over the
internet and store data accordingly (ex. Google Apps, adobe , Google
Drive, Apple iCloud etc)

platforms. Internet-related infrastructure includes the hardware, software and services to maintain
corporate Web sites, intranets, and extranets, including Web hosting services and Web software
application development tools.

Nearly all LAN and many wide area networks (WANs) use the TCP/IP
standards for networking.
Firm, Infrastructure & Competencies
How Dollar Rent a Car Uses Web Services?

Dollar Rent A Car uses Web services to provide a standard intermediate layer of software to “talk”
to other companies’ information systems. Dollar Rent A Car can use this set of Web services to link
to other companies’ information systems without having to build a separate link to each firm’s
systems.
