Linear and Non-Linear Functions: Done By: Sama Majed Grade: 8D

This document summarizes the key differences between linear and nonlinear functions. It explains that linear functions have a straight line graph, while nonlinear functions have a curved graph. It also provides examples of how to determine if a table represents a linear or nonlinear relationship based on whether the dependent variable increases at a constant rate as the independent variable increases. The document outlines the distinguishing characteristics of linear and nonlinear equations, such as linear equations having one degree and forming a straight line, while nonlinear equations have a degree of 2 or more and form a curve.

LINEAR AND

NON-LINEAR FUNCTIONS

DONE BY: SAMA MAJED

GRADE: 8D
LINEAR FUNCTION:

• Linear functions are those whose graph is a straight line.

•  A linear function has one independent variable and one
dependent variable. The independent variable is x and the
dependent variable is y.
NON-LINEAR
FUNCTION:

• Non-linear means the graph is not a straight line.

• The graph of a non-linear function is a curved line.
• A curved line is a line whose direction constantly changes.
HOW DO YOU KNOW IF DATA IS LINEAR
OR NONLINEAR?

• To see if a table of values represents

a linear function, check to see if there's a constant rate of
change. If there is, you're looking at a linear function! But if
there is not, you’re looking at non-linear function
HOW CAN YOU TELL IF A FUNCTION
IS LINEAR OR NONLINEAR FROM A
TABLE?
This table is NOT linear. The

You can tell if a table is linear by looking at how X and Y change. If, as

X increases by 1, Y increases by a constant rate, then a table is linear.
You can find the constant rate by finding the first difference.
