Number Systems: Mathematics Holiday Homework

The document discusses different number systems: Natural numbers include 1, 2, 3, etc. and have properties like closure under addition and multiplication. Whole numbers include natural numbers and zero. Integers include whole numbers and their negatives. Rational numbers are numbers that can be represented as fractions. Irrational numbers cannot be represented as fractions. Real numbers include all rational and irrational numbers.

•The counting numbers 1,2,3,4….. are called natural numbers.

•The smallest natural number is 1.

•The collection natural number is denoted by ‘N’.

•N= {1,2,3,4,5 …..}

Natural
Numbers
•The sum of any two natural numbers is a natural number. This
is known as the closure property of natural numbers.

•Addition of natural numbers is commutative. If ‘a’ and ‘b’ are

any two natural numbers then:

a+b=b+a

Properties of •Addition of natural numbers is associative. If ‘a’ , ‘b’ and ‘c’

are any three natural numbers then :
Natural ( a + b )+ c = a +( b + c)
Numbers •The product of two natural numbers is a natural number.

•Multiplication of natural numbers is commutative.

•A set of natural numbers including zero are called whole
numbers.

•All the natural numbers are whole numbers but all whole
numbers are not natural numbers.
•It is represented by ‘W’.

•W = { 0,1 ,2 ,3,4,5 .....}

Whole
Numbers
•A set of all whole numbers including the negative of all natural
numbers.

•All whole numbers and natural numbers are integers but all
integers are neither whole numbers nor natural numbers.

•It is represented by ‘Z’.

•Z = { ....., -2, -1, 0, 1, 2......}

known as rational number.

•It is represented by ‘Q’.
