Solving Systems of Equations

By Substitution method
Solving By Substitution method ( Replace method)

These are the steps:

Label the equations
Search for one equation which is in the
style "variable = ...“ or Find an equation
that looks like this x=.. Or Y=..
Replace (i.e. substitute) that variable in
the other equation(s).
Solve the other equation(s)
1) Solve the system using substitution

Equ1
 Step 1: label the equations
x+y=5
Equ2
y=3+x
 Step 2: Find an equation that looks like this
x=.. Or Y=..(one variable on one side), on Look at the second equation
variable by itself (equ2)

x+y=5
 Step 3: Go to Equ 1 x + (3 + x) = 5
Replace y by 3 + x
2x + 3 = 5
2x = 2
x=1
 Step 4: Go to Equ 2 x+y=5
Find Y (1) + y = 5
y=4
2) Solve the system using substitution
x=3–y Equ1
 Step 1: label the equations
x-y=7 Equ2

 Step 2: Find an equation that looks

like this x=.. Or Y=..(one variable on Look at the first equation !
one side), on variable by itself (equ1)

x-y=7
Step 3
Go to equation 2 (3 – y) - y = 7
Replace x by 3 – y

3–2y=7
-2y=4
Y= -2

X=3–y
X= 3+ 2
X=5
3) Solve the system using substitution
y = 2x – 4 Equ1
 Step 1: label the equations
6x +y = 4 Equ2

 Step 2: Find an equation that looks

like this x=.. Or Y=..(one variable on Look at the first equation !
one side), on variable by itself (equ1)

Step 3 6x + y = 4
Go to equation 2 6x +2x - 4 = 4
Replace y by 2x-4
8x = 8
X=1

Step 4: Find y Y=2x–4

Go to equ 1 Y= 2×1 – 4
Y= -2
4) Solve the system using substitution

2 x  7 y  12 Equ1
 Step 1: label the equations
x  3 2y Equ2

 Step 2: Find an equation that looks like this

x=.. Or Y=..(one variable on one side), on Look at the second equation
variable by itself (equ2)

2x + 7y = -12
 Step 3: Go to Equ 1 2(3-2y) + 7y= -12
Replace x by 3 – 2y
6 – 4 y + 7 y = -12
6 + 3y = -12
3y =-18
Y = -6

 Step 4: Go to Equ 2 x = 3 – 2y
X= 3 – (2 ×-6)
Find x X= 3 + 12
X=15
5) Solve the system using substitution

y=x+1 Equ1
 Step 1: label the equations
4x + y = 6 Equ2

 Step 2: Find an equation that looks like this

x=.. Or Y=..(one variable on one side), on Look at the second equation
variable by itself (equ1)

4x + y = 6
 Step 3: Go to Equ 2 4x + (x + 1) = 6
Replace y by x + 1
5x + 1 = 6
–1 –1
5x = 5
x=1
 Step 4: Go to Equ 1 y=x+1
Find y y=1+1
y=2
