Auto Billing System

The document describes a project proposal for an automatic billing system for mall shopping using RFID technology. It outlines the current problem of long wait times for customers paying at cash registers. The proposed system would use RFID tags on products and a reader to automatically detect items placed in a cart and display the running total on an LCD screen. This would allow faster payment and a better shopping experience for customers by reducing lines and wait times. The proposal covers objectives, methodology, advantages of the new system over traditional barcoding, and specifications for hardware components like tags, display, and control unit.

 PROJECT PROPOSAL

PROJECT TITLE: AUTO BILLING MALL

SHOPPING
NAME: THABIT MBOGAMO
ADMISSION NO: 170640720281
YEAR OF STUDY: 2019/2020
PRESENTATION OUTLINE

 Introduction
 Problem Statement
 Objectives

Introduction

 Shopping is easy and fun but waiting on a bill counter after

shopping is too boring and tedious task. Huge amount of rush plus
cashier preparing the bill with barcode scanner is too time
consuming and results in long ques. So here is proposed of an
innovative project which is suitable for use in places such as
supermarkets, where it can help in reducing man power and in
creating a better shopping experience for its customers.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

• Waiting for a long time on a bill counter after shopping is too

boring and tedious task. Also huge amount of rush plus cashier
preparing the bill with barcode scanner is too time consuming
and results in long ques. Sometime the company think to increase
the number of cashier and manpower to solve this problem which
result in increasing the cost to run the business.
OBJECTIVES

Main Objective
• To design automatic billing system by using Radio Frequency
Identification (RFID) card reader.

Specific Objectives
• To establish design requirements and specifications for the project
• To design power supply that will power the system.
• To design and interface sensing unit with control unit.
• To program microcontroller
• To design alerting system
• To design the display system
• Design and testing circuit prototype.
METHODOLOGY

 Introduction
 Literature review
 Data collection
 Data analysis
 System design
 Simulation
 Prototype building and testing
 Report Writing
Literature review

 EXISTING SYSTEM
Through reviewing projects and paper works relates to this projects,
the following are the existing system which relate to this project.
 BARCODE SCANNER
A barcode scanner is an optical scanner that can read printed
barcodes, decode the data contained in the barcode and send the data
to a computer. Like a flatbed scanner, it consists of a light source, a
lens and a light sensor translating for optical impulses into electrical
signals. Additionally, nearly all barcode readers contain decoder
circuitry that can analyze the barcode's image data provided by the
sensor and sending the barcode's content to the scanner's output port.
ADVANTAGES OF BARCODE SCANNER

Barcodes are inexpensive

to design and print.
Generally they cost mere
pennies, regardless of
their purpose, or where
they will be affixed.
Inventory control
improves. Because
barcodes make it
possible to track
inventory so precisely.
Disadvantages of barcode scanner
Generally, barcode scanner
cause long queue, as the
costumers wait in a line to
pay the products they have
purchased.
 Barcode scanners need a
direct line of sight to the
barcode to be able to read.
In order to read the barcode,
the barcode scanner needs
to be quite close; around no
more than 15ft.
PROPOSED SYSTEM

 The system consists of a RFID reader which is controlled

by control unit. So whenever the shopper puts any product
in trolley it is been detected by the RFID module and it is
displayed on LCD along with the price of the product. As
the shopper adds more things it is detected by the module
and the price according to that increases. In case if
customer changes his/her mind and doesn’t want any
product added in the trolley he can remove it and the price
added will be deducted automatically.

• Block diagram of Proposed System
Advantages of proposed system
 The system can read RFID
tags from a greater distance
than barcodes.
 RFID tags don’t need to be
positioned in a line of sight
with the scanner.
 RFID tags can work within
much greater distances;
information can be read from
a tag at up to 300 ft.
 RFID tags are read/write
devices.
Advantages cont...

RFID contain high levels of security; data can be

encrypted, password protected or set to include a
‘kill’ feature to remove data permanently.
RFID tags carry large data capabilities such as
product maintenance, shipping histories and expiry
dates; which can all be programmed to the tag
DATA COLLECTION

Introduction
 Data collection is a scientific approach of gathering the
information from different sources to get a complete and
accurate picture of an area of interest. Review of relevant
literatures from different, books, professional journals,
discussions, interviews, observations and materials from the
internet which are used as a guide toward designing of auto mall
shopping system.
Existence of the problem
 The data collected is divided into two parts namely; primary data
and secondary data.
Primary data

The following data examines the information that is

obtained directly from different 30 sample people from
city mall and chops of Dar-es-salaam by means of
questionnaire and interview relating to the existing
systems to support the existence of the problem and
therefore the need of the proposed system.
Some questionnaires with the 30 costumers
QUESTION RESPONSE
QUESTION PRESENTED YES NO DON’T
KNOW
1. Is it worth your time waiting on a long cashier
queues after mall shopping? 20 10 0
2. Do you wish to spend a short time on a cashier 21 9 0
queue after mall shopping?
3. Do you think it is a good idea creating an auto 25 5 0
billing system for mall shopping?
4. Do you think staying on a billing queue for less than 10 20 0
5 minutes worth your waiting time?

5. This system will allow payment as fast as possible, 5 20 5

probably 1-2 minutes. Would you recommend for this
system to be adopted for the shopping malls?
Secondary data

Typical separate scanners used as input devices.

A basic bar code scanner will plug into a Computer via
USB or use some form of wireless technology. This is just
used as an input device to the computer (we used to call
this a keyboard-wedge interface). More simply put, the
computer program doesn't know that a scanner is attached
and treats the data as though it were key strokes from the
user.  The advantage of this is that there is no need for
special software or programming on the computer
Cont.…
In its simplest application you hook the scanner up,
make sure the curser is in the correct field, scan a bar
code containing the data you need such as a work order
number, an item number, or a location, and the data will
immediately appear in the field on the screen. But this
system makes the people who is responsible for
scanning tired due to scanning activity for every
product, also people who are waiting in the line to scan
their product tend to waste time if there is a long queue.

CONCLUSION

The project book covered the preliminary information

such as existence of the problem, literature review,
gathering various previous projects. The proposed
design, its general functionality and function of each
block has been discussed. Also the book contains
collected data which verify existence of problem to be
solved and design requirements. This information will
be very useful in analysis of data then designing and
implementation of the prototype.
RECOMMENDATION

The project was designed to be used in malls and

supermarkets which involve with shopping different
product. If this system will be used to the mall and
supermarket which encounter many queues, it will help
to reduce those queues and save times of the shopping
for the costumers who are doing shopping.
