Diphthongs: Evan Hanan Pandu

This document defines and provides examples of diphthongs and triphthongs in English. It begins by explaining that diphthongs are vowel sounds formed by the movement from one vowel to another. There are eight diphthongs categorized as either closing or centering diphthongs. Closing diphthongs have a more close second element, while centering diphthongs move towards a central schwa sound. The document also describes four English triphthongs which involve the movement between three vowel sounds. Examples of common words containing different diphthongs and triphthongs are provided.

 1. Introduction
This unit will explain about english diphthongs &
triphthongs. Diphthongs is the sounds which formed
by the movement from one vowel to another.
Diphthongs has eight sorts (first five = closing
diphthongs, and the rest = centering diphthongs).
 2. Objectives

 To be able to identify & describe about english

diphthongs & english triphthongs, and;
 To know the different between english diphthongs &
english triphthongs.
 3. Closing Diphthongs

In closing diphthongs, the second elements

is more close than the first. The closing
diphthongs is as follows :
a. /ei/
Formed by the movement from /e/ (located
in half-close region on trapezium figure) to /i:/
which located in close region. Ex: late, rain,
eight, great.
b. /əʊ/
The diphthongs move from half-close to the
close. Ex: sow, soap, foe, soul.
/aɪ/
The first element of /aɪ/ in is pronounced very
close to cardinal [ɔ] and the second, after the
configuration changes, is close towards the
pronunciation of /ɪ/.
Example: Five, Tie,Buy

Diphthong /ɑʊ/
The diphthong /ɑʊ/ starts further back than /aɪ/
and changes towards /ʊ/.Its describes as starting
slightly more fronted than /ɑ:/.
Example: loud, gown, house, cow, bow, brow,
grouse
Diphthong /ɪə/
This is one of the centring diphthongs (/ɪə/,
/ɛə/ and /ʊə/). Diphthong /ɪə/, starts with the
tongue positioned for /ɪ/.
Example: beard, weird, fierce, ear, beer, tear
The Centering Diphthongs: /ɪə ɛə ʊə/

it’s locate the centre of the mouth and note a

pair of pure vowels prominently located there.
One of the pairs, the schwa, plays host to these
four diphthongs; this is the reason they are
described as centring diphthongs.
18./ɪə/
This sound is a centering diphthong initiated from the front
close region.
Example :dear /dɪər/, here/hɪər/ weird /wɪəd/

19./ɛə/
This sound centring diphthong is initiated at the half-close
region.
Example : care/keər/ , pair /peər/ , share/ʃeər/

20. /ʊə/
This diphthong begins at the close back region of the mouth
and goes on to meet the host at the centre of the mouth.
Example : pure /pjʊər/, tour/tʊər/
THE TRIPHTHONGS: /ɑɪə ɑʊə eɪəɔɪə/

There are glides not only from one pure vowel to

another but also from the second vowel to the
third, so three pure vowels are involved.
21./ɑɪə/
This triphthong starts at the open region, goes to the front
close region and ends at the middle of the mouth. The
tongue too has a complex movement during the
articulation as it moves from the low position to the
high position and finally to the neutral position.
Example : fire/faɪər/  , liar/ˈlaɪ.ər/ , lion/ˈlaɪ.ən/
22./ɑʊə/
This triphthong also starts at the open region, moves to
the back close region and ends at the middle of the
mouth.
Example : power /paʊər/, our/aʊər/ , flower/flaʊər/
23./eɪə/
The triphthong begins to move from the front half-close
region rising slightly to the front close region then ends
at the centre of the mouth. It is another complex
triphthong as it involves a multiple configuration of the
jaws and the lips.
Example : player /ˈpleɪ.ər/
24./ɔɪə/
This triphthong moves from the back close position to the
front half-close region and ends at the middle of the
oral cavity.
Example : employer/ɪmˈplɔɪ.ər/
