ERTMS
Introduction

• ERTMS is a project developed by eight

companies - Alstom Transport, AZD Praha,
Bombardier Transportation, CAF, Hitachi
Rail STS, Mermec, Siemens Mobility and
Thales - in cooperation with the European
Union, railway stakeholders and the GSM-R
industry.
• ERTMS has been designed to be fully
interoperable across Europe
• ERTMS aims at replacing the different
national train control and command
systems in Europe.
Basic Components

ERTMS has two basic components

• ETCS, the European Train Control System, is
an automatic train protection system (ATP)
to replace the existing national ATP-
systems;
• GSM-R, a radio system for providing voice
and data communication between the track
and the train, based on standard GSM using
frequencies specifically reserved for rail
application with certain specific and
advanced functions.
Advantages
Increased capacity on existing lines
and a greater ability to respond to
growing transport demands: as a Higher reliability rates: ERTMS may
continuous communication-based Higher speeds: ERTMS allows for a significantly increase reliability and
signalling system, ERTMS reduces the maximum speed up to 500 km/h; punctuality, which are crucial for both
headway between trains enabling up passenger and freight transport
to 40% more capacity on currently
existing infrastructure

An opened supply market: customers

will be able to purchase equipment
Reduced maintenance costs: With for installation anywhere in Europe
Lower production costs: one proven,
ERTMS level 2, trackside signalling is and all suppliers will be able to bid for
harmonised system is easier to install,
no longer required, which any opportunity. Trackside and
maintain and manufacture making
considerably reduces maintenance onboard equipment may be made by
railway systems more competitive
costs any of the six ERTMS suppliers, which
makes the supply market more
competitive

Reduced contract lead time due to

the significant reduction of process
engineering;
ERTMS Levels
ERTMS - LEVEL 1 (Eurobalise without and with infill)
• Overlay to Existing Signaling System.
• Movement Authorities through Eurobalise.
• Train Integrity & Position by Track Circuit.
ERTMS Levels
ERTMS Level 2
• No more Trackside Signals Required.
• Movement Authorities through GSM-R.Train Position via Eurobalise.

ERTMS Level 3
• Movement Authorities through GSM-R.Authorities through Eurobalise.
• Train Position via Eurobalise.
• Train Integrity Onboard.
• Moving Block.
ERTMS Components

• Euro-balise
• LEU (Lineside Electronic Unit)

• Juridical Recording Unit (JRU)
ERTMS Implementation
ERTMS is implemented in European Railways

It is also being pursued in India

• NCRTC
• Indian Railway on pilot project
• NHSRCL
