CE181 CE Law, Contracts & Ethics: Lecture - 6 Value Engineering

This document discusses value engineering as a requirement before detailed design engineering projects. It defines value engineering as a systematic evaluation of a project design to obtain the most value for the cost. Value engineering aims to improve the overall cost of projects by investigating factors like materials, construction methods, shipping costs, planning, and cost-benefit values. The fundamentals of value engineering include analyzing a project's function, worth, cost, and value relationship. Value engineering is concluded to deal with determining the functions of each assembly and their purpose, with the goal of improving value by lowering the cost-worth ratio.

LECTURE - 6
VALUE ENGINEERING

AS A REQUIREMENT BEFORE DOING THE

DETAILED DESIGN ENGINEERING PROJECT

Reynaldo S. Sitjar, Civil Engineer

LECTURE - 6
VALUE ENGINEERING

6.0 Designing a General Engineering Project requires a

systematic evaluation of a project design to obtain the most
value for every peso cost which is “value engineering”.
6.1 Improvement in the overall cost of the project
can be realized by carefully investigating the following:
A. availability of materials
B. construction methods and techniques
C. shipping costs or physical limitations
D. planning and organizing
E. cost / benefit values

6.2 Fundamentals of Value Engineering which includes:

A. Function – specific or use intended for something.
B. Worth – the least cost required to provide the function.
C. Cost – total amount required to obtain/use the function
D. Value – the relationship of worth to cost.
Value= Worth/Cost

6.0 VALUE ENGINEERING
IN A GENERAL ENGINERING PROJECT
CONCLUSION
6.0 Value Engineering Discipline deals with the functions of
each part of an assembly. Function is used here to mean the
purpose or use of an item. The VE approach concerns itself with
determining value.
a) Assist in determining whether to proceed with the
study. The study should proceed only if poor value. Indicated
when the value index is greater than one, > 1, exists. Good
value is indicated then the index is one.

b) Locate areas where the cost / worth ratio is greatest.

Generally these areas will have the greatest VE potential and is
useful in selecting projects for VE study.

c) Provide a factor for measuring the effectiveness of VE

efforts. Did the cost / worth ratio after VE unity?
PART 2 - QUESTIONS ON
VALUE ENGINEERING

1. (15 points ) Why is it important to study the index value of

each scope of work or work breakdown structure prior to the
final preparation of detailed engineering design?

2. (45 points) Choose three (3) of the most beneficial use of
Value Engineering,
and explain briefly in 2 to 3 sentences each.

3. (20 points) The Table entitled “ Potential Saving from VE”
When is the Value Engineering advantageous?
When is the Value Engineering disadvantageous?

NOTE : PART 1 – Multiple choice 10 x 2pts = 20points
