STS Lesson 2 For Students ALM

This document discusses the importance of biodiversity for human health and society. It defines biodiversity as the variety of life on Earth, from single-celled organisms to large multi-celled organisms. A significant decline in biodiversity directly impacts humans by reducing the ecosystem services that provide our physical and social needs. To preserve these services, we must conserve biodiversity and recognize the value of all organisms we share the planet with. Loss of biodiversity poses risks to the delicate balance between human health and biology.

SCIENCE,

TECHNOLOGY, AND
SOCIETY
Chapter III: Specific Issues in Science,
Technology, and Society
LESSON 2: BIODIVERSITY AND THE
HEALTHY SOCIETY
Biodiversity and Ecosystem
- Biodiversity is defined as the vast
variety of life forms in the entire Earth.

- Encompasses all kinds of life forms,

from the single-celled organisms to
the largest multi-celled organisms.

- The variety among living organisms

from all sources, including terrestrial,
marine and other aquatic ecosystems

- Biodiversity is the source of the essential goods and

ecological services.
Biodiversity and Ecosystem
Biodiversity and Ecosystem

- Significant decline in biodiversity has direct human impact

when ecosystem in its insufficiency can no longer provide
the physical as well as social needs of human beings.

- We, as human inhabitants of the ecosystem, must

preserve and conserve the biodiversity of all creatures.
Threats to Biodiversity
Health, Biology, and Biodiversity
- Basic needs of living organisms such as air, water, food,
and habitat are provided by its environment.
- The evolution of human beings was due to the improved
access to these basic needs.
- Advances in Agriculture, sanitation, water treatment and
hygiene have had greater impact on human health than
medical technology.
- The interrelation between human health and biological
diversity is considerable and complex.
- With the current biodiversity loss at unprecedented rates,
the delicate balance between human health and
biological diversity is at risk.
Benefits of Biodiversity
• Society benefits greatly from the richness of
biodiversity since humans can source from nature
biological resources such as food, medicine, energy,
and more.
• Biodiversity in natural ecosystems can also regulate
climate, flood, pollination, water and air quality, water
storage, decomposition of wastes, among others.
• However, these numerous benefits of biodiversity are
vulnerable to exploitation.
• Humans need to be responsible in optimizing the
benefits of biodiversity through the proper utilization
of science and technology
LESSON SUMMARY
• We have to consider the entire Earth as a single unit, a
loss of single-celled species or a family of wild grass can
have adverse effects in the entire biosphere.
• Biodiversity loss will have a great negative effect
especially to us humans since the “value of biodiversity is
the value of everything”.
• We must recognize the value of the organisms with which
we share the planet.
• A mitigating plan and a workable plan of action should be
studied in order to not compromise biodiversity, while at
the same time, promote good health among the society.
PROCESSING QUESTIONS
1. Do you think that Earth can exist without human beings taking
care of it? Or biodiversity also needs human beings for it to be
in a continuous growing process? Why?

2. Concept mapping. By creating a venn diagram, list down

several concepts that prove that the society or human beings
benefit from biodiversity. On the other circle, enumerate the
different challenges and disadvantages that biodiversity suffers
from as we work our way to acquire its benefits. On the space
where the two circles meet, list down possible ways and
strategies on how we could acquire these benefits and needs
without compromising the growth process of biodiversity.
