Class A Chopper: Presented By-Mrs. Pranjali Bafila

Class A choppers operate in only one quadrant by controlling the supply voltage to an inductive load. When the chopper is on, the supply voltage is connected across the load and current flows through the load. When the chopper is off, the free-wheeling diode allows the load current to continue flowing in the same direction through the diode. As a result, both the average output voltage and current for a Class A chopper are always positive, meaning it operates only in the first quadrant.

CLASS A CHOPPER

PRESENTED BY-
Mrs. Pranjali bafila
Classification of chopper
• Depending upon the direction of output
current and voltage, the converters can be
classified into five classes namely-
• CLASS A CHOPPER( one quadrant operation)
• CLASS B CHOOPER( one quadrant operation)
• CLASS C CHOPPER(two quadrant operation)
• CLASS D CHOPPER(two quadrant opeation)
• CLASS E CHOPPER(four quadrant operation)
CLASS A CHOPPER

Fig(1) class A chopper, v0 - i0 characteristic

MODE OF OPERATION
when chopper is on-

Fig(2) class A chopper

Working of class A chopper
when chopper is ON-

• Figure (2)shows a Class A Chopper circuit with

inductive load and free-wheeling diode.
• When chopper is ON, supply voltage V is
connected across the load i.e., and current i0
flows as shown in figure
When chopper is off-

Fig(3) class A chopper

When chopper is off
• When chopper is OFF, v0 = 0 and the load
current i0 continues to flow in the same
direction through the free wheeling diode.
• Therefore the average values of output voltage
and current i.e., v0 and i0 are always positive.
Hence, Class A Chopper is a first quadrant
chopper (or single quadrant chopper).
