AGENDA

• SINGLE CIRCULATION
• LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
• HEART BEAT
• PULSE
• BLOOD PRESSURE
• TRANSPORTATION IN PLANTS
SINGLE CIRCULATION
• The heart pumps deoxygenated blood to the gills where it gets
oxygenated. Oxygenated blood is then supplied to the
entire fish body, with deoxygenated blood returned to the heart.
• In fish, the heart only has one atrium and one ventricle. The oxygen-
depleted blood that returns from the body enters the atrium, and
then the ventricle, and is then pumped out to the gills where
the blood is oxygenated, and then it continues through the rest of the
body.

LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
• A SYSTEM WHICH TRANSPORTS THE FLUID CALLED LYMPH FROM
TISSUES OF THE BODY TO BLOOD CIRCULATORY SYSTEM IS CALLED
BLOOD CIRCULATORY SYSTEM.
LYMPH
1. A YELLOW COLORED FLUID WHICH CONTAINS LARGE PROTEIN
MOLECULES,DIGESTED FATS AND ENZYMES.
2. ALSO KNOWN AS EXTRACELLULAR FLUID BECAUSE IT IS DERIVED
FROM TISSUE FLUID WHICH IS PRESENT OUTSIDE THE CELLS.
COMPONENTS OF LYMPHATIC
SYSTEM
LYMPH CAPILLARIES-TINY PORES CONTAIN LARGE PORES INORDER TO
PERMIT ENTRY OF PROTEIN MOLECULES.
LYMPH VESSELS -CAPILARIES CONNECTED TOGETHER TO FORM
VESSELS
LYMPH NODES -GLAND LIKE STRUCTURES PRESENT INBETWEEN
LYMPH VESSELS TO FORM LYMPH NODES.
LYMPHOCYTES -LYMPHOCYTES ARE MAINLY INVOLVED IN CLEANING
PROCESS OF LYMPH AND ALSO GIVE PROTECTION

LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
Lymphatic system consists of
1)lymph capillaries, lymph vessels, lymph nodes and lymph glands.

2) To supply nutrients to the cells (tissues), the liquid portion of the blood with
nutrients flows out of the capillaries. This is called tissue fluid.

3) To transport the tissue fluid into the main blood stream, a separate system called
lymphatic system is present.

4) Lymph is the vital link between blood and tissues by which essential
substances pass from blood to cells and excretory products from cells to blood.
LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
5) From intercellular spaces, lymph goes into lymphatic
capillaries.

6) Lymphatic capillaries join to form large lymph vessels which

finally open into larger veins.

7) Lymph flows only in direction, that is from tissues to heart

through veins.
BLOOD PRESSURE
• THE PRESSURE AT WHICH THE BLOOD IS PUMPED AROUND THE BODY
BY THE HEART .
SYSTOLE: IT IS THE PHASE OF THE HEART BEAT WHEN THE HEART
CONTRACTS AND RELEASES BLOOD INTO ARTERIES.
SYSTOLIC PRESSURE: THE MAXIMUM PRESSURE AT WHICH THE
BLOOD LEAVES THE HEART THROUGH THE
MAIN ARTERY.
• DIASTOLE: IT IS THE PHASE OF THE HEART BEAT WHEN THE HEART
RELAXES AND CHAMBERS ARE READY TO FILL WITH
BLOOD IS CALLED DIASTOLE.

DIASTOLIC PRESSURE : THE MINIMUM PRESSURE EXERTED BY AN

ARTERY WHEN THE HEART IS IN RELAXED
STATE.

NORMAL BLOOD PRESSURE: 120/80 mmHg

HYPERTENSION: HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE DUE TO NARROWING OF

ARTERIES

HEARTBEAT AND PULSE
• HEART BEAT:ONE COMPLETE CONTRACTION AND EXPANSION OF THE
HEART IS CALLED HEARTBEAT.
• IT IS MEASURED USING STETHOSCOPE
• NORMAL HEART BEAT 70-72/MIN
• PULSE: EXPANSION OF AN ARTERY DURING EACH TIME WHEN THE
BLOOD IS FORCED INTO IT

NO OF HEARTBEATS=PULSE RATE.
ASSIGNMENT
( Refer NCERT TB page no’s 107 to 108 )
• What is lymph? Mention its functions.
• Define the following
• Blood pressure
• Heart beat
• Pulse
TRANSPORTATION IN PLANTS
• Plants have tissues to transport water, nutrients
and minerals.
• Xylem transports water and mineral salts from the
roots up to other parts of the plant.
• Phloem transports sucrose and amino acids
between the leaves and other parts of the plant.
XYLEM
• Xylem is the vascular tissue responsible for the conduction of water
and nutrients from the roots up to the shoots and leaves, especially
of terrestrial plants.
Xylem consists of
• Xylem parenchyma
• Xylem fiber
• Xylem tracheids
• Xylem vessels

TRANSPORTATION OF FOOD
• The phloem tissue in plants transports food materials from the leaves to
different parts of the plant. The transportation of food in phloem is
achieved by utilizing energy from ATP.

The four elements of the phloem are
• Sieve tube elements: They are long tube-like structures arranged
longitudinally
• Companion Cells
• Phloem Parenchyma
• Phloem Fibers
ASSIGNMENT
1. WRITE THREE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN XYLEM AND PHLOEM.
2. DEFINE THE FOLLOWING
A)TRANSPIRATIONAL PULL
B)ROOT PRESSURE
C)TRANSLOCATION

NOTE: PREPARE THE TOPICS DOUBLE CIRCULATION,COMPONENTS OF BLOOD

AND BLOOD VESSELS FOR WRITING EXAM TOMORROW.
