Solutions Using Substitution Method: Solve This System of Equations by Using Substitution
This document discusses two methods for solving systems of equations:
1) Substitution method: Select one equation and solve for a variable, substitute into the other equation, then solve the resulting equation.
2) Literal coefficients method: Multiply equations to arrange coefficients of the variable to eliminate so they are opposites, add equations to eliminate the variable, then solve the resulting single-variable equation.

Solutions Using Substitution Method
Solve this system of equations by using substitution.
Answer :
Select one equation and solve
it for one of its variables.
In the other equation,
substitute for the variable just solved. Solve the new equation.
Substitute the value found into
any equation involving both variables and solve for the other variable.
The solution is x = 1, y = –2.
Solutions Using Literal Coefficients • Solve this system of equations by using Literal Coefficients.
Answer :
Multiply the top equation by
2 and the bottom equation by 5. Arrange so that the coefficient of y is 10 and the Choose a variable to eliminate, coefficient of x is –10 and with a proper choice of multiplication, arrange so that the coefficients of that variable are opposites of one another. Add the equations, leaving one equation with one variable.
Solve for the
remaining variable.
Substitute the value found
in Step 4 into any equation involving both variables and solve for the other variable. Interpreting Equations • Lines Parallel to the Axes
3x – 8 = 0 , this equation
represents a line parallel to the y axis and 2 units from it.
5y – 12 = 0 , this equation
Represents a line parallel to the x axis and 2 units from it. • Lines Passing Through the Origin
A linear equation, such as
3x + 7y = 0 , represents a line passing through the origin.
• Lines Parallel to Each Other
Equation that are exactly alike,
except for the constant term, represent parallel lines. The lines represented by the equations 4x+5y=-1 and 4x+5y=15
