Investment banking involves three main functions: (1) acquiring savings from individuals and directing these funds to businesses seeking capital, (2) providing long-term financing and advisory services, and (3) facilitating capital formation. The first modern American investment bank was established during the Civil War era to finance the war effort. Investment and commercial banking were later separated by the Glass-Steagall Act in 1933. Major investment banks provide services like mergers and acquisitions advising, underwriting initial public offerings, trading securities, investment management, and risk management.
