TESLA
MODEL S

Presentation by
Laxmikant G. Joshi
Tesla Motors
•It
is an American automotive and energy storage company that
designs, manufactures and sells electric cars, electric vehicles.

•It was incorporated in 2003 and was named

after electrical engineer and physicist Nikola Tesla.

•Its Chairman and CEO is Elon Musk.

•Its car models include Tesla Roadster, Model S, Model X.

Tesla Model S
•It is a full-sized plug-in electric five-door luxury hatchback

•It
is rated as one of the safest cars in the world. It scored a
perfect 5.0 NHTSA automobile safety rating.

•Its is the only all-electric car on the market

that was designed form the ground up.

•In 2003 Automobile Magazine

editors association named it
the Automobile of the Year
Production
•It is manufactured in Tesla Factory in Fremont, California.

•Model S’’s unique components including the battery pack,

battery module and drive units are manufactured in-house

•Each piece are manually assembled and would take three to five
days to complete the assembly process.
Body
•Body is combination of high-strength steel and light weight aluminium.
•98% of it is constructed from aluminium.

•It was designed by Franz von Holzhausen who gave it its luxury look.

•It has a very sleek, aerodynamic design having a sportive look.

Power Train
• It is a 416 hp (310kW) and 600 N.m rear-mounted electric motor.
•Thefront and rear axles have no mechanical linkages. With dual motors the
power distribution among them is controlled electronically
•The rear axle has a traditional open differential

•TheModel S P85D, dual motor all-wheel drive vehicle has a top speed of 249
km/h and its accelerates from 0 to 97 km/h in 3.1 seconds
Regenerative Braking
•Thepower train also provides regenerative braking power of more than 60kW
which reduces both energy consumption and improves brake lifetime.

•Tesla model S uses a single pedal system

to control speed. Single-pedal speed control
is simply the control of both acceleration
and deceleration with a single pedal.

•Software's are used to better control the path, frequency and strength of
electricity into and out of the motor, which in turn controls the magnetic fields
in the motor, making it go faster or faster or slower.
Regenerative Braking
(contd.)
Speed and torque are changed by
varying the frequency of the
alternating current and how far the
stator magnetic field is placed ahead
of the rotor’s magnets

As magnetic braking is activated, an

electric current is induced in the
wires of the stator’s electromagnets
and that alternating current flows
out of the motor is converted to DC
and charges the battery
Battery
•Model S uses 7104 lithium ion batteries to power its motor

•They are arranged in flat rectangular frame which also acts as one of
the support structures of a car

•Thebattery total power capacity is 60 kWh which is rated to deliver

370km assuming a constant speed of 89 km/h.

•They are arranged in 16 modules each,

Each module contains six groups of 74 cells.
Battery (contd.)
•Each individual battery has a energy capacity of 2200mAh.
The technical name is 18650

•Advantages-

•Cost- The capital cost of manufacturing equipment for 18650 cells are low.

•Reliability- The cell is relatively small and variability

from cell to cell is low.

•Safety- The gaps between the cells allow for cooling

and minimize the possibility of thermal runway.

•Up gradation- The batteries can be upgraded.

Battery Placement
•Battery pack of the Model S form the floor of the vehicle between the
axles.

•Battery pack- single heaviest components of the vehicle, the Model S

has a center of gravity height of only 18 inches. It helps against
rollover.

•Dueto absence of heavy engine at the front the mass is centralized

between the axles, lowering rotational inertia.

•Makes it possible to remove or replace the entire unit in 90 seconds

Chargers- Superchargers
Superchargers consists of multiple Model S chargers working in parallel to
deliver up to 120 kW of DC power directly to the battery.

Model S is currently the only EV

capable of charging at upto 120 kW,
which equates to 170 miles of range
in about 30 minutes.

They work by delivering DC power

directly to the battery instead of

going through the charging equipment

Safety
•The Model S is one of the just a few cars to have ever achieved a 5-
star safety rating from both Euro NCAP and the U.S. National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA)
•Its
battery pack is designed to be disconnected in millisecond in any
mishap.

•With no gasoline engine block, the Model S sports a big front crumple
zone that absorbs energy and protects passengers in each crash
AIRBAGS :

2. Passenger front

3. Side airbags
4. Curtain airbags
5. Driver’s knee airbag
6. Driver’s front airbag
