Lesson 2 - Output Devices - Printers

This document summarizes different types of output devices, including printers. It discusses dot matrix printers, inkjet printers, laser printers, and 3D printers. For each printer type, it describes how they work, where the ink/toner comes from, typical uses, and advantages and disadvantages. The key points covered are how each printer produces output using different technologies like pins, ink droplets, laser beams, or additive layering, and when each type would be best used based on factors like speed, quality, volume, and cost.

OUTPUT DEVICES

J. Chidzvete Computer Science Borrowdale Brooke, Harare, Zimbabwe.

OUTPUT DEVICES
1. What is output?
It is the information we get from the computer
2. What will happen to the information? The
computer will pass or present to the output device.
3. What are the examples of output devices?
Monitor, Printer, Headphones, Computer Speakers, Projector,
GPS, Sound Card, Video Card, Braille Reader Generator,
Speech-Generating Device, Headphones,
LET’S LOOK AT PRINTERS
1. What are the type of printers in ICT?
a. Dot Matrix printers
b. Ink-Jet printers
c. Laser printers
d. 3D printer
DOT MATRIX PRINTER
1. How does it look like?
The print head has a pins that move in and out printing the
characters. The characters will be made up of dots. You can actually see
the dots.

2. Where does the ink come from?

The pins strike a ribbon which transfers the ink onto paper.
3. On what paper does the dot matrix print on?
It prints on continuous paper.

4. What quality does it print?

It prints low resolution quality.
DISADVANTAGES AND
ADVANTAGES OF DOT MATRIX
PRINTER
Advantages
- Cheap to use and maintain.
- Can be used in dirty, dusty and moist environments.
- Multi parts copies can be produced. (Can produce many carbon copies)

Disadvantages
- Very noisy. Not recommended for the office.
- Low print quality.
- Very slow printing
- Cost more than the Inkjet to buy.
INKJET PRINTER
1. How does it work?
The print head consists of nozzles that spray droplets of ink.
The droplets form characters on the paper. There is a stepper
motor that moves the print head across the page
2. Where does the ink come from?
The ink comes from ink cartridges.
3. How are the droplets produced?
There are two technologies Thermal bubble and Piezoelectric
technologies.
DISADVANTAGES AND
ADVANTAGES OF INKJET PRINTER
Advantages
- High quality output.
- Light weight and takes less office space.
- Do not produce environment dangerous compound.

Disadvantages
- Slow printing.
- Ink cartridge quickly runs out.
- Print can easily smudge.
- Cartridge is expensive.
LASERJET PRINTER
1. How does it work?
It transfers toner (“a dry ink powder”) onto paper using a
laser beam. It makes use of static electricity to produce the
image and text.
2. Where does the toner come from?
The ink comes from toner cartridges.
3. Where is it used?
Since it prints the whole page at once, it is used where high
volume colour and monochrome printing is needed.
DISADVANTAGES AND
ADVANTAGES OF LASERJET
PRINTER
Advantages
- Printing is fast for high volume.
- Can handle large volume prints.
- Quality is high.
- Toner lasts for a long time.

Disadvantages
- Expensive to buy.
- Colour laser tend to be expensive.
- Produce compounds that harmful to the environment.
3D PRINTER
1. How does it work?
It uses inkjet technology. The printer head moves left, right,
up and down, printing layer by layer.
2. Where does the toner come from?
It does not use toner but uses material such as concrete,
resin, powdered metal, plastic or ceramic.
3. Where is it used?
Used with CAD (Computer Aided Design) to produce real life
object like vehicle spares, COVID-19 shields, houses.
DISADVANTAGES AND
ADVANTAGES OF 3D PRINTER
Assignment Question Printers
Give three advantages and three disadvantages of using 3D printers?
Thank you
