Definition of Quadratic Function

The document discusses quadratic functions. It defines quadratic functions as functions of the second degree that can be written in the form f(x) = ax^2 + bx + c, where a, b, and c are real numbers and a ≠ 0. The standard form and vertex form of quadratic functions are presented. Examples of changing between standard and vertex form are shown through guided practice problems. The document concludes with a formative test involving identifying quadratic functions, writing functions in vertex and standard form, and determining the a, b, c coefficients.

Quadratic Functions

Quadratic function – is a function of the second degree

Defined by f(x) = ax2 + bx + c, where a, b, and c are
real numbers and a ≠ 0

Standard form: f(x) = ax2 + bx + c

Vertex form: f(x) = a(x – h)2 + k

where (h,k) – vertex of the parabola
Quadratic Functions
Identify which of the following are quadratic functions.
1. f(x) = 2x2 – x + 1

2. g(x) = 3x(x + 2)

3. h(x) = -x (x + 1)2
4. f(x) = 2(x – 1)2 + 3
5. f(x) = 2x + 1
Rewriting quadratic function from
standard form to vertex form and
vice versa.
Writing in Standard Form
• Goal is to manipulate the numbers so that
they are in the form f(x) = ax² + bx + c

*Reminder* Order of Operations: PEMDAS!!

• You will need to distribute monomials,

binomials, and trinomials!
• Let’s look at some examples…
EXAMPLE Change from vertex form to standard form

Write f (x) = 4(x – 1)2 + 9 in standard form.

f (x) = 4(x – 1)2 + 9 Write original function.

= 4(x – 1) (x – 1) + 9 Rewrite (x – 1)2.
= 4(x2 – x – x + 1) + 9 Multiply by Distributing.
= 4(x2 – 2x + 1) + 9 Combine like terms.
= 4x2 – 8x + 4 + 9 Distributive property
= 4x2 – 8x + 13 Combine like terms.
GUIDED PRACTICE

A. Write the quadratic function in standard form.

1. y = –(x – 2)(x – 7)
ANSWER
–x2 + 9x – 14

2. y = – 4(x – 1)(x + 3)
ANSWER
–4x2 – 8x + 12
GUIDED PRACTICE

A. Write the quadratic function in standard form.

3. y = –3(x + 5)2 – 1
ANSWER
–3x2 – 30x – 76
4. g(x) = 6(x – 4)2 – 10
ANSWER

6x2 – 48x + 86
Writing in Vertex form
Vertex form: f(x) = a(x – h)2 + k
where (h,k) – vertex of the parabola
GUIDED PRACTICE

B. Write the quadratic function in vertex form.

1. f(x) = x2 – 6x + 2
ANSWER
f(x) = (x – 3)2 - 7
2. g(x) = - 3x2 – 24x + 11
ANSWER

g(x) = - 3(x + 4)2 + 59

Formative Test
A. State whether each relation describes a quadratic functions
or not.

1. y = 3 – x2
2. y = 3x + 3
3. y = 2(x + 5)2 + 7
4. y = (x + 2) (x – 3)

5. y = (x – 2)2 – x2
Formative Test
B. Transform each function in vertex form. Then identify the
value of h and k.

1. y = x2 – 4x + 4
2. y = x2 + 10x
3. y = x2 - 4
4. y = x2 – 2x + 7

5. y = x2 – 12x
Formative Test
C.. Transform each function in Standard form. Then identify
the values of a, b and c .

1. y = (x – 4)2
2. y = (x – 6)2 + 4
3. y = 5(x + 3)2 - 1
4. y = -2(x – 2)2 - 2

5. y = (x + 2) (x -7)
