The teacher begins the lesson by reviewing how to add and subtract single digits with student examples. They then introduce adding and subtracting by 10 through examples such as 75 + 10 = 85. The students practice adding and subtracting by 10 on worksheets with teacher support. Some students struggle but improve through peer tutoring. Finally, the teacher expands the concept to adding and subtracting multiples of 10, such as 50 + 30 = 80, before assigning homework for additional practice.

Adding and subtracting by 10

1 Grade
st

C
Teacher: Good morning students! Today we are going to learn
how to add and subtract by 10, but before that we are going to
practice how to add and subtract single digits. Lets start with 8
+ 1, we have 8 and we are adding 1 so the answer is 9. Now
lets do 3 + 4, we have 3 and we are adding 4, so the answer is
7. You should already know this but we will practice a little bit
before we start adding and subtracting by 10. Who wants to
answer?

Students: me, me!

Teacher: Okay Margarita, what is 5 + 3?

Student: mmm, 7

Teacher: Does anyone want to correct her?

Student: me, me!

Teacher: okay, Jose. What is the answer?

Student: it is 8, because I have 5 already , so I am adding 3
more, that is 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 8

Teacher: very good Jose. Margarita again, what is 6 + 2?

Student: I have 6 already so I am adding 2, 6 + 1 + 1 = 8.

Teacher: Very good Margarita, please make sure you take

your time when adding or subtracting, you will get better with
practice. Who wants to answer some more?

Student: me, me!

Teacher: Okay Guillermina, what is 3 + 8?

Student: it is 11

Teacher: very good. Now lets do some exercise. I will pass

around an exercise sheet, please put your name on it, you will
have 5 minutes to finish it. Please bring it to me when you are
done.
Teacher: ( walking around to see if anyone needs help,
after 10 minutes.) Okay, everyone did great so we are
going to practice subtracting single digits. We are going
to do 8 – 3. We have 8 slices of pizza and we decide to
eat 3 slices, how many slices are left? Anyone?

Students: me, me!

Teacher: what is the answer Mercedez?

Student: it is 5.

Teacher: Very good. What is 9 – 3?

Student: me, me!

Teacher: What is it Robert?

Student: 6
Teacher: Great! Now lets do some exercise to refresh
our minds. I will pass around a new work sheet.
Please put your name on the sheet. You will have 10
minutes to finish it. When you are done please raise
your hand and I will grab your work. Any questions?

Students: No

Teacher: Okay, here we go.

Students: Yay!

Teacher: (walk around until the students are done)

Okay, everyone did great! Now we are ready to start
adding and subtracting by 10. Any questions?

Students: No
Teacher: Now we are going to look at a work sheet that
asks us to add and subtract by 10. Does anyone know how
to add and subtract by 10?

Student: me, me!

Teacher: excellent, than it will be easier for you, for those

you don’t know please pay attention. Lets look at few
examples and we will get started with the work sheet. Lets
say for example we have the number 75 and we wanted to
add 10 to 75, it’s a lot easier than you think. When you are
adding 10 to something there is always going to be a 0 in
the last number, 5 + 0 its just 5, when you are adding 7 + 1
is going to be 8. So now I know that 75 + 10 is 85. Do you
think you can do one in your head?
Student: me, me! (few hands are raised)

Teacher: great, lets do 65 + 10 . I know that 5 + 0 is 5 and 6 + 1 is

7, so the answer is 75. The only number that changes is 6. Does
anyone want to try?

Student: me, me!

Teacher: Okay Peter, come and do 33 + 10.

Student: Okay, 3 + 0 is 3 and 3 + 1 is 4, so the answer is 43.

Teacher: very good, anyone else?

Student: me, me!

Teacher: Okay Helen, do 77 + 10.

Student: 7 + 0 is 7 and 7 + 1 is 8, so the answer is 87

Teacher: very good! I will pass around a sheet for you to work on, I
will give you 10 minutes. If you finish please raise your hand and I
will grab your work. Any questions?
Students: No

Teacher: Great, lets start!

Students: Yay!

Teacher: (walk around to see if anyone needs help,

until everyone is done) Okay, Everyone did great!
Now we will subtract by 10. Okay, lets start with the
same number. 75 and take away 10, we have the
same type of problem, the only difference now is
that instead of adding we are subtracting. 5 – 0 its
just 5, we are not taking away nothing from 5, so its
just 5. Now 7 – 1 is going to be 6, we are taking
away 1 from 7 so now we have 6. The answer to
this is 65. Lets do another one, 65 – 10. 5 – 0 is 5
because 0 is not taking anything away from 5, 6 – 1
is 5 because we are taking away 1 from 6, so not
we have 5. The answer is 55. Does anyone want to
try?
Student: me, me!

Teacher: Okay Christian, lets do 87 – 10.

Student: the answer is 67

Teacher: that’s incorrect, take a look. 7 – 0 is 7 because

0 is not taking away anything from 7, so it is still 7. 8 – 1
is going to be 7 because we are just taking away 1 from 8
so 8 -1 is what? Please answer Christian.

Student: 8 – 1 is 7, so the answer is 77. Sorry!

Teacher: That’s awesome Christian, it is very important

that you take your time when you are adding and
subtracting, you already know how to do it, but you can
make mistakes if you are rushing it. You will get better, so
try to practice at home.
Teacher: Now lets start doing the exercise sheet.
We will work individually and we might work in
groups later. Lest see if everyone gets it. Please
put your name on the sheet. Lets practice, I will
give you 10 minutes to finish it. When you are
done please come forward and give me your
sheet. Make sure that you take your time when
you are adding or subtracting. You will get better
the more you do it.

Students: Yay!!

Teacher: (walking around to see if anyone needs

help)
Teacher: Okay! I got all your exercise sheets. I
see that few of you had problems with this so
we are going to make groups of 4. I will assign
those students that got it right with the ones that
are still learning. The students that got it right
please help the students that need help. I will
also walk around to see how you are all doing.
Any questions?

Students: No.

Teacher: Great! I will give you back the

exercise sheet. Now get together in groups of 4
and I will switch around students based on how
well they did. We will have a quiz on this so if
you still don’t get it I will make sure you know it
before you go home today.
Teacher: Everyone did a great job, now it looks like everyone knows
how to do this. Now lets try something different. Lets do 50 + 30, 0 +
0 is still 0, and 5 + 3 is 8, so the answer is 80. What is 33 + 40?
Anyone?

Students: me, me!

Teacher: Okay, Sunny. What is it?

Student: 3 + 0 is 3, and 3 + 4 is 7, so the answer is 73

Teacher: Very good!, so as you can see it is the same problem but
instead of adding 1 we are adding the number that we need to solve.
Now lets try 34 + 60, anyone?

Students: me, me!

Teacher: Okay, Daisy. What is it?

Student: 4 + 0 is 4, and 3 + 6 is 9, so the answer is 94.

Teacher: that’s it. Very simple. Any questions?

Students: No

Teacher: Great, now lets work on the exercise sheet, I will

pass it around and you will have 10 minutes to finish it. If you
are done please let me know. Here we go!

Students: Yay!

Teacher: (walk around to see if anyone needs help until

everyone is done) Okay, almost everyone did great, but don’t
worry, you already know how to do this. You just need to add
correctly, so take your time. Now we will do some subtractions.
What is 50 – 20? Very simple. It is the sample problem but now
we are subtracting. 0 – 0 is 0, and 5 – 2 is 3, so the answer is
30. What is 30 – 10? Anyone?

Students: me, me!

Teacher: Okay Juan, what is it?

Students: 0 – 0 is 0 and 3 – 1 is 2, so the answer is 20.

Teacher: That’s very good Juan. Lets take it one step further.
Lets do 55 – 15. 5 – 5 is 0, and 5 – 1 is 4 so the answer is 40.
Any questions?

Students: No

Teacher: okay, lets do 78 – 34. Anyone?

Students: me, me!

Teacher: Okay, Kate. What is it?

Student: 8 – 4 is 4, and 7 – 3 is 4 so the answer is 44.

Teacher: that is great Kate. It is very simple. Same problem but

more solving.
Teacher: Okay, Now I will pass around the last exercise sheet. By
now you should be able to add and subtract by 10. Here we go, you
have 10 minutes.

Students: Yay!

Teacher: (walk around to see if anyone needs help until they are
done) Okay, almost everyone did great. Lets get into the same
groups again, and help those you are still having problems. The
class is ending in 15 minutes, so you have 10 minutes to get
together. Any questions?

Students: No

Teacher: Okay, lets go. (Walking around until everyone is done)
