“BAROQUE AND

ROCOC ART”
BAROQUE
• The Baroque style is characterized by exaggerated motion
and clear detail used to produced drama, exuberance, and
grandeur in sculpture, painting, architecture, literature,
dance, and a music.
• In fine art, the term Baroque (derived from the Portuguese
'barocco' meaning, 'irregular pearl or stone') describes a
fairly complex idiom, originating in Rome, which flowered
during the period c.1590-1720, and which embraced
painting, and sculpture as well as architecture.
BRIEF HISTORY
• The Baroque was a period in art history that started at the beginning of the 17th-
century and continued to evolve until the 18th-century. It started in Italy but
spread to most countries of Europe, and to the colonies in the Americas.
• The Baroque started as a response of the Catholic Church to the many criticisms
that arose during the Protestant Reform in the 16th-century. The seat of the
Catholic Church in the Vatican saw in art an opportunity for reconnecting with
the people.
• The Baroque style is characterized by exaggerated motion and clear detail used
to produce drama, exuberance, and grandeur in sculpture, painting, architecture,
literature, dance, and music. Baroque iconography was direct, obvious, and
dramatic, intending to appeal above all to the senses and the emotions.

• The word “rococo” derives from rocaille, which is French

• Rococo, style in interior design, the decorative
arts, painting, architecture, and sculpture.
BRIEF HISTORY
• The father of Rococo painting was Jean Antoine Watteau (French, 1684–1721),
who invented a new genre called fêtes galantes, which were scenes of courtship
parties.
• Genre paintings were popular ways to represent the Rococo period's bold and
joyous lust for life. This included fete galante, or works denoting outdoor
pastimes, erotic paintings alive with a sense of whimsical hedonism, Arcadian
landscapes, and the "celebrity" portrait, which positioned ordinary people in the
roles of notable historical or allegorical characters.
• Rococo painting, which originated in early 18th century Paris, is characterized
by soft colors and curvy lines, and depicts scenes of love, nature, amorous
encounters, light-hearted entertainment, and youth.
