painting, and sculpture as well as architecture.
BRIEF HISTORY
• The Baroque was a period in art history that started at the beginning of the 17th-
century and continued to evolve until the 18th-century. It started in Italy but
spread to most countries of Europe, and to the colonies in the Americas.
• The Baroque started as a response of the Catholic Church to the many criticisms
that arose during the Protestant Reform in the 16th-century. The seat of the
Catholic Church in the Vatican saw in art an opportunity for reconnecting with
the people.
• The Baroque style is characterized by exaggerated motion and clear detail used
to produce drama, exuberance, and grandeur in sculpture, painting, architecture,
literature, dance, and music. Baroque iconography was direct, obvious, and
dramatic, intending to appeal above all to the senses and the emotions.
