PROCESS CONTROL

SYSTEMS
• Turbine has to be operated as per the requirements of the
application.
• Turbine has to be made to respond for the electrical load fluctuations.
• The Process Control System should take care of this by allowing more
or less steam to compensate and allow turbine to run at the required
speed.
• Turbine speed control, steam pressure control and steam flow control
are the main control loops we encounter in these applications.
There are a number of application methods
available, following four are the important
application-oriented controls:
• Simple condensing turbine application
• Non-condensing turbine application
• Extraction turbine in pressure let down application where the
demand for LPS always exceeds the intermediate supply.
• Pressure-regulating extraction turbine application when LPS demand
is limited.
Simple condensing turbine
application
• In power plant applications, the turbine is to act as a prime mover for
an electrical generator and to run at a constant speed.
• The required energy is supplied from a steam header.
• The speed is maintained by a governor.
• The controller output actuates a steam value to manipulate the steam
quantity.
• If the speed is varied, the controller has to respond, correct it and
bring the speed back to the set point.
Non-condensing turbine
application
• Power plants have requirement of low-pressure steam for heating
applications such as deaerators.
• In such cases it is more economical than condensing one.
• Instead of wasting energy by condensing the extracted steam can be
beneficially used for low pressure applications.
Extraction turbine in pressure
let down application
• If the demand for low-pressure steam is more than the extraction
steam, this application can be used.
• A turbine normally works in two stages, in the first stage the steam is
extracted for the low-pressure application. Then in the second stage
the extracted steam is shared between the turbine and the low-
pressure header.
• Steam from the high pressure header is directly supplied to the low-
pressure header if the low-pressure steam header may not get
enough steam.
Pressure-regulating extraction
turbine application
• In case the low-pressure steam demand is less than that of extracted
steam, this application is useful.
• The excess steam may have to be vented out.
• The steam inlet of the turbine can be reduced.
• A summing relay is added with positive input from speed controller
and negative input from pressure controller.
• Whenever there is a pressure increase in the low-pressure header,
there will be a increase in negative input which will cause the inlet
valve to close. While speed controller output will open the valve.
